I am down to the last 4 wires on an engine swap and i am at a work stoppage.

Does any one remember which wire goes where in the ignition coils. I got the two right and two left, but which position for which color?

The schematic doesn't specify.

Thank you in advance.

Todd

Look closely at the coil terminals. I think I remember Randy saying there was a (+) marking on the coils. This would be the red with black tracer to the (+) connections of each coil. The other connections will be orange with a black tracer for one coil and grey with a black tracer for the other coil. If they are opposite and it doesn't fire, swap the coil connectors. :)
Edit: Orange w/black 1-4 coil , Grey w/black 2-3 coil.

The bike is back together. All electrical works, except starter. NOTHING. Like it has no power to it. Any ideas?

First, make sure your battery is fully charged and all terminals are tight.

Near the battery, is a short, very heavy wire, makes sure that's tight and clean.
I believe the starter relay is right there. Try tapping that (lightly) while trying to crank.

Try putting the bike on the CC, IN neutral, kick stand up, clutch pulled in (RED kill switch set to RUN).

Then try cranking.. (trying to eliminate ALL safety switches)

Thanks for all the replies!

Had battery tested before installing after 18 hours of trickle charge and found it to be excellent.

The neutral light does not come on when in neutral.

With the kickstand up with run mode, starter button does nothing.

When I pull the clutch in, I hear a click and the engine light now comes on.

I hear the fuel pump and the gage cluster (meter) works.

For the neutral light, below is a pic of the neutral light switch.

Ground it out and see if the bulb in the gauge illuminates.

The orange pointer is touching the switch at the rear of the engine:

I found the grounding wire....

....but, I can’t remember where to ground the battery at.

Does anybody remember? (I took this a part 15 months ago and I am old and have short term memory loss and I am old and have bad short term memory loss and I am old and have bad short term memory loss.)

As in battery main ground cable?
If so, it would likely go directly to the starter or directly to a suitable lug, stud, or bolt that is part of the upper crankcase. Not the cylinder head, cylinders, or any cover. The electrical energy needs to go to where it is used. The starter.

Best guess if the cable reaches....

+1 ^^^.

From where that cable is now, (attached at one end), gently move it about, there has to be a place to bolt it...

Randy, you don't have a pic with all the pic's you have with the tank up?

Hey everybody...thank you!

I was starting to doubt myself. I have done engine swaps to VW bugs, HUMV's, UH-1H Huey Helicopters and M1-A1 tanks, but I still started to doubt myself.

Thanks for all your help.

It's all done, kinda. I'm getting an intermittent error code of "19", so i will check kickstand and ECU wiring. runs great.
So here are some pics of what happened, stripped bike, new motor and completed project. my 20 yr old son is very stoked.

....oh.. new tires are on their way. I rode it around and want new tires for my son since it is his first bike.

I think there is a ground wire in the area behind the head and below the aft end of the tank.

FWIW - grounding to the load source can reduce electrolysis. Granted anything on the engine will work electrically speaking for a ground, but current through the head to block is bad as it can promote electrolysis and take out the head gasket over time.

So where abouts did the ground wire bolt to??

Frame or ?

It bolts to the engine on left side a couple inches forward of the top rear mount. The harness was totally covering it. I had to have the local service manager look it up. I washed, waxed, registered and insured it today.

Adding it lowered my insurance?????? Weird!

Runs great. I put new oil an filter, but will changed it in 100 miles any ways. My bike has 60+ thousand miles, but this engine supposedly has 16,000
