FZ6....where to begin

I guess I didn't realize alternative methods of getting a bike to start would make me look like a criminal. Didn't mean to cause a fuss. I really do have a Salvage FZ6 here, and I'm trying to decide how to get it running. I have the ignition key sitting in the bike, and there is a wiring harness that goes to the back of the bike. I was hoping to make this baby into a track bike. I'm not going to ask how to hotwire, because obviously that is a touchy subject, but I have a vin and a plate number if that helps. I can jiggle the harness, and the gauges will flash. I know the battery is low, because it sat in this guys garage for 3 years, and he never worked on it. It is covered in dust. I guess my dilemma is how much to spend figuring out whether this bike is worth spending on. I'm gonna go soon and get a new battery, and I guess while i'm out I will pick up some spark plugs. The starter button feels....like it is pushing back when I push it. It doesn't feel like it has any give. I'm wondering if the button will work or not. I hope my post doesn't get shut down again, because I do want some input here to see what you guys think. It's a 2005 FZ6-S. Any ideas of where to start are appreciated. Thanks!

fresh battery is probably step #1. If you measure the one that is in there and it is reading at least 12 volts, it might be possible to recharge it. but after sitting for 3 years you will probably have less hassles if you just replace it.

Second/third is fresh fuel and oil.

Why is the bike "salvage" was it wrecked, set on fire, flooded, etc?

Are the electrical controls all in good order? are all engine sensors present?

Thanks for the reply. The harness that runs to the back of the bike branches into two sections, and one has a fuse box on it, which is pretty much destroyed. I think that may be or become a problem, but I was thinking about making this a track bike, so if it goes to the rear tail lighting it won't matter. Other than that, all the electrical setup appears to be intact. I removed the fuel tank to get to the battery, and the tank has gas in it. I also drained the oil, which was a bit dark, but it seemed there was enough of it and it was in good enough condition to show minimal engine damage. The frame appears completely straight. I'm not sure how it was wrecked, but the subframe is broken off at one side. It has also obviously been down on both sides. I was thinking about getting a subframe from like an r6 and trying to weld it on and make it a single seater.

You wont start a bike with 3 year old petrol in it for a start.

No offence,but if the guy you got it off,didn't think what was relatively a new bike 3 years ago was worth fixing,then it might be worth cutting your losses if it's as badly damaged as you say.

On an unrelated note if none of this works out for you and it just drives you totally nuts: I once achieved orgasmic-self-satisfaction once by shooting a lawnmower with my 30-30. The bullet went all the way through the block, the piston, the head, and continued onward into the side of a hill, as it pushed the *&^#@ lawnmower backwards about two feet and as the piece of *&^$ actually gave it's audible last breath - very appropriately one huge puff of blue smoke slowly arose from the corpse. Suddenly all was right in the world.

On an unrelated note if none of this works out for you and it just drives you totally nuts: I once achieved orgasmic-self-satisfaction once by shooting a lawnmower with my 30-30. Sounds like you may also have an intermittent connection in that harness. I would check all the main fuses and carefully inspect the wiring for breaks or pins/ plugs that might be disconnected. If you have a toasted rear harness disconnect it. Seek out a service manual and a friend who is savvy with bikes.

If the friend is anything like me you may have to invest in mass quantities of beer! :rockon:

can you get the gauges to stay on? if not then it is a loose wire for sure, but if you can get them to stay on and it will not crank at all, then i would just start following wires from the starter on up for any that are cut or broken. also. when you turn the bike on it should make a slight whirrrrr noise for about 1-2 seconds as the fuel pump kicks on, if neither happen then it might be something as simple as the kill switch wires or kickstand switch are broken, so take a look at those as well.

This is helpful... thanks guys. Let me put some pics up. I already pulled of what fairings there were, and the subframe was basiclly hanging by a thread, so I bent it until it broke off. Here is my current result.

Okay I got a new battery, I'm gonna try to get this thing to start. I reattached the gas tank, and I cut off the broken fuse box from the harness and stripped down the wires. Does anyone know which wires go to what? Here are pictures.

i'd reccomend you get a haynes manual or whatever is the equivalent in america
