my 05 fz6 has just inder 13000 kms on it, this past summer it developed a ticking noise in the top end left side of engine . pretty sure it sounds like a valvetrain noise . its only there when the engine is hot , first on startup no noise until i ride it for a few kms . i know that yamaha uses shime in this bike i have shimmed the valves in my crf450 many times but the 450 is a single cylinder and alot easier to do . iam looking for info on how to complete this on my fz6 video , pics etc..

I think you are getting ahead of yourself. Have you done a TB synch?

FWIW, the valve CHECK interval is 40,000 km...no mandatory adjustment. If your valves need adjusting at 13,000 then something else is probably going wrong as well...

I havent had this bike long just one riding season i put about 2000 kms on it , i have not done a tb sync . only thing i did was change the spark plugs out with the proper yamaha dealer plugs . the noise gets really noticable after a hr ride or so shirt runs it there but not as loud .

+1 on that, plus on a side note I've yet to hear of anyone who has had to have their valves adjusted at the first interval, they have had them checked, but they all were in tolerance and none needed to be adjusted

It hurts my head too much to try and convert km to miles. It might be your timing chain tensioner. Replaced mine at around 9 or 10 thousand miles and did make a difference in the top end noise. The tensioner is mechanical. Comparing the original with the replacement on my bike the original was somewhat rough in operation compared with the new one. Has been 20,000 miles since it was replaced and no noise, but I don't listen to the noise as carefully as I used to. The engine makes a certain amount of mechanical noise which you grow used to.

My bike also has a ticking noise when hot, starts about 3500rpm until about 5000rpm. Had it investigated twice, changed cam chain tensioner without resolution.
Turned out to be injector noise.

To check them is much easier than to adjust them.

Get the valve cover removed and the cam chain cover (right side, smallish, oval in shap) off, then get it to TDC. To find exact TDC, crank the engine thru the compression cycle. (The camshaft lobes will face away from each other).

With the cam chain cover off, there's a mark on the left side of the mating surface/block and a mark on the pick up rotor, they need to be lined up. There's also marks on the cam gears that should line up with the head surface.

You can now check the clearances and rule them good or in need of adjustment.

With the cam chain cover off I'd check for extra pay in the chain (make sure you don't jump a tooth in the timing).

The tensioner, once removed (keep it in for checking the cam tolerances) should move without binding and an even force. If its binding, not smooth, not much pressure, I'd replace it. A loose chain/ bad adjuster will make a racket.

*As a side note, if the engne oil is real thin, improper or very old, it'll contribute to any kind of engine noise...
I sent you a PM as well...

In my experience if you don't know what your doing it's best not to do any major mechanical work. I see cars every day that have been worked on by people who didnt know what they where doing and nine times out of ten they caused more damage than they fixed so it's probably best to let a Yamaha tech do something like that

+1 on that however the OP has adjusted shim and bucket valves on other bikes, he obviously has experiance, just not on this bike...

I've been to dealerships where they've made my bike worse or couldn't find the problem. I had to resort to the internet, search a bunch, and find the problem. I've had Yamaha screw up a TBS sync, not find a corroded connector (found with the help of an FJR forum) and was actually told by a main tech "that the hesitation was normal for a 4 cylinder", the bike was at least two years old and NEVER ACTED UP in that manner. He was told, by myself that was BS and to please just leave. The other mechanic/service manager AND Yamaha tried their hardest but couldn't find the harness corrosion problem(common for the 04 model apparently).. Besides that, they were kind enough to put 2 deep scratches in my frame while doing the sync-no charge! Honda and Kawasaki I have some stories as well (none for Harley but seat time was very limited there)

i agree totally , i dont trust anyone to do anything on my bike except for myself , just because u take a bike to a dealer dosent mean that the guy whos working on has a clu .
