Headline in today's Utah newspaper: the state Senate just approved, 27-1, of getting rid of Utard's "private club" law! It now goes to the House, and they have to vote on it before Thursday, when the annual Legislative session ends. If this passes, you will then be able to enter any bar in Utard without "joining" their membership, filling out forms, and paying a membership fee.

I've lived here 14 years now. Can This Actually be Happening??? :eek:

We have two more days. What usually happens is the mormon "cult" (I refuse to call them a church) will issue an "opinion" on such matters, and then the Legislature (95% mormon thanks to carefully-cultivated gerrymandering) will vote as they're told, er, "suggested".

We'll see. They finally banned smoking in clubs this year; if they ban "memberships" I may actually start going to see live music again. :)
 
memberships? are you kidding me? i was thinking about doing some skiing there from time to time but mormons are fing nuts. what is the point of the current law?
 
I had to be a member just to get a cold one in Moab a couple years back. About the dumbest thing I ever had to do just for a beer in a bar. Utah isn't know for their heavy drinkin', but it makes up for it with vacation land in the southern half.
 
you cant just grab a beer? that is stupid as hell... ur telling me you have to become a member of that bar to go in? :rolleyes:
 
seperation between church and state in Utah doesnt seem to exists. Thats flat out against the Constitution...and why Ill never set foot in Utah for as long as I live.
 
There are counties in Texas that have had that law for years, and years. Pretty stupid if you ask me. There is a card you can buy for $5.00 to "join" the club. When I was in a unit at Ft. Hood I used to have one, can't remember the name of it now. Another work around is if you are staying at a given hotel (geared at travelers) you are considered a memember of the club for that evening and they wave the fee. This only applies if you are eating at the resturant at the hotel and order a drink.

There are also counties that are still dry in Texas, which is dumb too. Most of the counties with these type of laws are in the Panhandle. The problem is the only people who benefit from the laws are the liquor store that are the next county over, right on the county line. And right next to the liquor stores you'll find the strip club. And I'm sure the wise elected officials all hang out there.

So bottomline, if I want a beer after a day of driving into North Texas, I bring my own.

You can get a beer at the store and enjoy it in your hotel room.
 
Yeah. Never gonna happen. Born and raised in UT, I moved to the land of "Live Free or Die" at the age of 32. Only part I really miss is the southern areas. I travel back on business 1-2 times a year and get caught up on all the wacky liquor laws. Just nuts.

The best part is when family and friends come to visit in NH and the expressions on their face when I buy wine and import beers in the supermarket. Not to mention state liquor stores that are open on Sunday :eek: and are not hidden way out behind some industrial park where they are nearly impossible to find.
 
In CT, they are creating these bars because you cannot smoke in a public bar but you can in a "club" so many are establishing the "club" rules.
 
Wow, I thought that most of those laws were gone by now. Here in WI (Faith, Hope, Courage, Pabst) you can buy beer anywhere, any day of the week. Some cities have ordinances that curb sales after a certain time, but you can buy beer in a bar if needed that badly.:beer: WI wants to pass a state wide :smoking: ban. There are plenty of bars/restaurants that are smoke free, the whole dang state does not need to be. As an occasional smoker, I find this annoying.
 
Holy hell!I have never heard that before. I dont visit the bars to much but if I had to join a membership I would never go to one.:eek:
 
Well, it's now Wednesday. Didn't see anything in the paper about the "church" issuing any statement, but I didn't see that the House voted on the measure today either. Tomorrow's the deadline; fingers crossed...

I think if you're gonna be in a hotel on Sunday, you better buy your beer Saturday. (I might be wrong about this.) I agree about the scenary, though!

The Private Club requirement in Utard is HISTORY! July 1st it goes away! RAWK!!! According to the paper, there was a "back-room/private" meeting between the lds church, the Governor, and the tourism industry reps (illegal in Utard but never mind...) and suddenly it passed, 27-1 in the Senate, and passed the House (haven't found the ratio yet). I can't believe this; the club smoking ban took effect this year, and now no more Private Club requirements! It's almost like I'm living back in the States!!! w00t!!!

Of course, the church/state couldn't resist tampering with the law, Just Because They Can: Anyone entering a bar "appearing" to be 35 years old or less, must get his driver's license scanned; this digital thumbprint is then entered into a database "for only seven days" and then erased (right...). Plus, the "Zion Curtain" (the screen that bartenders had to mix drinks behind, and then carry the drinks around rather than over to deliver to the patron), is going away but any new bar/restaurant has to have provisions to mix drinks OUT OF SIGHT of any children (GOT to protect the CHILDREN!!), i.e. in another room (existing establishments, like sin-infested Applebee's, will (surprisingly) be "grandfathered").

These two restrictions I can live with, and hopefully in future years they too will be struck down (but probably not in my lifetime). I'm just glad I saw this much finally happen. Again, w00t!!!! :steve: :steve: :steve:

You are, sorta. You can still buy beer at grocery stores/7-11's on Sunday, but it's the 3.2% variety. Full-strength beer (plus wine and spirits) are only available in church/state-run liquor stores, not open on Sundays. Full-strength, however, requires the "sin tax", I'd pay $10 for a six pack of microbrew that you guys would pay $7 or $8 for... (which I refuse to do; glad I'm a lightweight! :D ).
