I do not have a torque wrench simply because they are not cheap and some part like the plug is not accessible with a torque wrench in the first place. But I always check the manual for the recommended torque value and follow it as far as possible.

My method is to use a scale to measure the max. pushing and pulling force your hand can exert. Normal body weight scale is OK for this job. Once you get your max pushing/pulling force, you can use simle leverage theory to calculate the force you need to tighten your wrench.

Of course, this is only approximate, but it is sufficient to make me feel more comfortable for the tightness I had done and at least won't damage the bolts.

Try and see.

Quick update fellas, I ended up taking out the water pump and removing the shank by hand/pliers. Was definitely easier than I had anticipated.
NO more torquing the coolant drain bolt.
