2009 fz1

I have been looking into an FZ1, local dealership has a nice red one for sale. But my lingering question is, is it really a lot faster?? It has about 40 more hp?? But it has a lot more weight. From what I have read the 0-60 times are not all that better than the fz6. With that being said, please feel free to disagree.

At this point the reason I would get one, would be the improved comfort of a bigger bike.

I am sure someone else will weigh in on this, but I believe FZ1inNH said it was only about 50lbs heavier.

If it had the FZ6's sexy underseat exhaust, i'd be all over it.

Wet weight of an 09 FZ1 is 485 lbs. Wet weight of an 09 FZ6 is 459 lbs. And that difference can lowered even further if you take the stock exhaust out and switch to a lighter after market exhaust. This is what Eric (FZ1inNH) did.

So even if you don't do the mod, you still have only 25 lbs weight difference in stock weights. The FZ1 does have a better power to weight ratio than the FZ6.

A bit less actually...

2009 FZ6 Wet = 459 lbs
2009 FZ1 Wet = 485 lbs

Difference is 26 lbs. Converting the stock potato launcher to a TB can? =11.8 lbs. This drops the difference to 13.2 lbs. You can drop another 5.4 lbs if you want to lose the center stand. ;)

The 0 to 60 times are better but it's all in how each driver handles the hole-shot. If both are starting from 1500 RPMs, it's going to be a tight race off the line. If both are starting in the 7K+ range, the FZ1 will eat the 6 in a hurry. Keep in mind the I-4 engine is not a hole-shot engine but more of a mid to top-end engine. The I-4's are built for speed and really hit their stride at around 8k. WOT on the FZ1 in 1st or 2nd? 8k means the front is lifting on me. It's either back down or shift at that point.

sounds about identical to what i have with the wife on the fz and me on my 1050 tiger. she braggs it up that she got infront of me after we took off from a stop sign. ( but she negates to mention it was because the front lifted on me and it felt like i was drifting her way some so i set it down slow and hit the rev limiter, she said "so, i still got you")

i belive the wet weight of the tiger is about the same as the fz1

Heh, all this talking about weight savings makes me think about how much faster my bike would be if I lost 40lbs - nevermind the bike. ;)

Now this is funny! I was taking to my boss just a few minutes ago....

He was talking to a friend last night who told him that he made a 15 HP gain on his bike! He lost 40 lbs! :rof:

But, it reality, it is true... power to weight ratio for a bike? If I dropped the 25 more lbs? Hmmmm...... ;)

Isn't it funny how the majority of FZ1 photos show the left side? Even the Yamaha brochure has two pictures from that side. Only the tiny picture on the spec sheet shows the right. What are they hiding? Could it be that honkin', huge muffler? I know aftermarket pipes are out there but what if you don't want to put out more noise and pollution? Maybe in 2010 they will do something about it. As it stands now it's like a wart on the face of a model.

This always amused me in the world of bicycles. People by carbon fiber this and titanium that to save a few ounces. Go on a diet! Leave the extra water bottle at home. Or just tell the truth: It ain't the weight - it's the cool factor.;)

Did anyone mention roughly how much of a differance insurance is between a fz1 and fz6? Maybe someone who has switched over can answer this. I know each individual case is going to be different, but just wanted to get a ballpark idea. Thanks, MATT

Roughly: I met a lady at my IBMC campout last week who rode an FZ-1 (she was 72!!) and she's paying $300/yr, I'm paying $200/yr; but I have no idea coverage differences, companies, etc...
