Ok....within the next 12 hours, I will become an Aunt for the first time!

Here's the problem;

My brother's wife has been admitted today to be induced (3 weeks early) because baby Hailey is in distress. Hailey only weighs 5 pounds and she has actually lost weight and has low blood pressure. My brother's wife actually weighs less now (at 8 months pregnant) than she did before she got pregnant. :(

They found out that her placenta has not been working, therefore, Hailey has not been getting the nutrients she needs.

I really really hope everything comes out ok. This is their first baby and right now, they are really scared.

Anyways, say your prayers for my little niece.

Thanks all!

shouldnt the doctors have found out about her placenta during her pregnancy? or is that even possible?

regardless, she will be in my thoughts and prayers...

About 4 months ago she took an AFP test (to see if the baby has downsyndrome) and it came back false positive, they took another test and it came back false negative. They just ignored the test and now the doctor is saying that the tests came back like that because of her placenta.....I don't really understand it, so it's kinda hard to explain.

As the forum physician, I should chyme in here. First off, my prayers are with you and your family. Secondly, the main test we use for placenta abnormalities is the ultrasound, which frankly is much harder to read that most people think. Having said that, an experienced OBGYN should have been able to do this without any trouble as it is considered a daily-use test in their practice. Do you know what was wrong with her placenta? Did she have Placenta Previa, Placenta Abrupto, Placenta Accreta, or Vasa Previa?

My prayers are with you and your family. Keep up your faith and let us know how everything turns out. God Bless
