I payed $165 for my first service change.

I took my bike to my dealer and they charged me $165 for my first service change. Is that not crazy or am I missing something? I mean I take my truck to a dealer to change the oil its just $55 thats a oil change everything checked and lubed not to mention a tire rotation. What do you guys and ladies pay?

Consider youself lucky. It usually cost more like $200. Like most other members here, I change my oil and filter myself. And after this visit, I thing you'll be doing it yourself as well. After all, it can be done in about 15 minutes. There is an excellent thread on how to change your oil here on this forum. But didn't you say you got your valve adjustment on this visit too?

What to they do for the first one? I have an appointment to have my oil changed (just reached 600 miles) and they're only charging around $30, but that's just the oil change. What is the standard for the first 600mi service?

The first service (oil and oil filter change) cost me €45 (71 USD) for parts and labour. It took about 15 mins to complete.

$165 to $195 is what I was quoted. Did they do the FI sync too? That would account for about one hour of labor. I'd guess their shop rate is $65 per hour? Maybe?

Here in the UK the first service is generally free although some dealers may ask £30/$55 for parts and oil.

sounds right if they actually did everything for the 600 mile service. if it was a basic oil change then $40 or so is reasonable, $60 is probably what you will see though. I spend $15 for oil and filter and do it myself

Yeah...

They pretend to go in and look over all of the nuts and bolts, look at the FI and synch if necessary, (which it is almost NEVER necessary,) and if they go in and mess with your valve clearnce, they went too far. Valve adjustment is recommended at 26,000mi or so, and even then it may not be necessary. They might just adjust your chain tension, which is good, because your chain will need it after the first 600 or so miles -after that, it is usually OK for another 8,000mi.

So they change your oil and filter, look it over and charge you double for oil and filter, plus "labor".

I do it myself, and learn my bike in te process; each one is different, and needs you to know what it likes. I liken it to having someone else come in a pleasure my wife to make sure she is operating like she should.

-not gonna happen unless she needs a full on gynecological exam or surgery.

at my local yam dealers i paid for oil and filter only. the labour was free for the first service,took 1and a half hours to do they checked everything ,and did it while i waited..

I paid $148 for mine.

I know they did more than change the oil. They adjusted my clutch. They greased the brake lever and checked at least some of the bolts (was a little black spot of grease on them), but I am guessing they checked them all. My salesperson was pretty cool and he told me to let him know when it was going in and he would look it over carefully.

I don't have a problem changing my oil and such. I figured they would know if there were any "problem areas" on the bikes during break in and would be able to take care of them. I'll probably do most all the maintenance from here on out.

umm.. no i didnt get my valves adjusted. If you read a previous thread i posted in that post I was saying I got mixed up on what was to take place on the first service visit at 600 miles. When I got into the dealership I told the lady I was here to have my valves adjusted and she said okay. But I later called her back to ask what they had done to my bike when I brought it in. I also said because I told you I was here to have my valves adjusted. She said no they knew not to do that. She said they just changed my oil and filter and went over my bike checking everything else. But still even though most you seem to pay more than I even does that not seem crazy. Like I said it don't cost no where near that when you have a vehicle serviced.

Is your bike under warranty? I mean when you service your bike yourself doesnt it void your warranty cause I was told a certified tech has to do it. I don't know just asking.

You cannot lump all service places into one bucket. You cannot even say that most of them are as you described, because in my experience they are not.

You need to do your homework and shop around and find a good one and stick with them.

I do most myself, mainly because I live in Denmark and my mechanic is in Germany. When I want something a bit technical doing I take it to the professional and get it done right

You will not need your valves adjusted until you have about 24,000 on the clock. I don't remember the specific interval off the top of my head.

I'd suggest you learn to do the basic work and save yourself a bundle. You will also learn to look for things that are not correct on your bike, oil level, coolant level, air pressure, chain tension, etc. If you can do the basic I feel it makes you a safer rider because you are confident in the condition of your bike.

Besides, you can use the money you save to buy cool tools a places like Sears! Tools are cool. :thumbup:

I have a friend who works at a car dealership and he says when someone pays for an oil change and requests premium oil they just put in the cheap stuff and charge for the premium stuff. I'd love to catch them in the act and sue the pants off of them. I'm sure not all dealerships are like that but some definitely are.

so i know how do you prove then you did the service without paper work proving you did? Do I keep my reciepts or something?
