O.k. so I was installing a new K&N air filter today and I noticed a couple of hoses from the filter box not attached to the engine. It looks like they should be, so my question is are they supposed to be attached? And if so they have probably been like that for at least since I bought the bike so am wondering if I did any damage. Bike runs awsome but you can never tell.

Looks like they should be attached to the part right below the hoses

Fishwiz4 is correct they should be plugged into the synchronizer unit.

And don't think you did any harm... yet. I would try and clean the synchronizer inlets first just in case.

I would think the syncronizer unit is (supposed to be) blowing excess air OUT thru those hoses into the air box for later ignition (I may very well be wrong). They appear to be on the clean side of the air filter assembly, perhaps just venting?

Looking at the parts fisch there called "Pipes" : http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/2004/FZ6+-+FZ600SS/INTAKE+1/parts.html .

Checking the shop manual, syncing etc, it doesn't address what they do short of connecting the air box to the syncing box. Randy's had his apart a bunch of times, he'll likely chime in, I'm curious as to what exactly they do..

In either case, I'd remove each hose and take a peek down both ends. The part into the air box, probably pull the air filter and blow air thru there getting rid of any loose dust. As for the other end, take a peek, look for anything un-usual, maybe some (a little) brake cleaner if carboned up/greasy and wipe it out quickly with a clean rag..

I guess who ever had the air box off last missed those two big hoses upon re-assembly :(

You may want to peek around a little bit for anything else un-usual or out of place.

BTW, as clean as it is (it looks BRAND NEW) and as well as it runs, I seriously don't think you'll have an issue with it pnce assembled correctly.

Those supply the idle air and a very small amount as the engine pulls off idle. The small amount of air the engine idles on gets filtered the hoses are LARGE to reduce pressure drop thus giving those screws better control.

Now think in terms of "least resistance". If I were AIR (haha), at 10,000 RPM would I go through the air filter or through those two open holes into the throttle bodies?? Your engine appears to have been sucking unfiltered air with those not being connected. The idle air circuit moves very low volume and from the picture you haven't hit 500 miles of gravel road as it looks pretty clean, so thats Good!

Anyway, lift the air box, you'll need some REAL LONG 3 or 4 mm allen cap wrenches to loosen the boots and set the box back down once those are fitted.

I personally would not poor anything into the inlets for cleaning if the idle and off idle performance is good. If you do, use some Mass Air Flow cleaner. It dries without leaving a residue.

PS - when I had my air box off the top clamps are easy to reach so you might attach the hose to the bottom and then drop the box on.
