Fe kit and signals installed

I installed my fender eliminator the other day. The picture explains it all pretty much. The factory plate light would not mount with the existing holes in the FE, so I mounted little LED's in the plastic piece that separates the two exhaust tips. I used butt connectors and heat shrink tubing on all connections. I was a little worried about the wires for the LED's getting hot being so close to the pipes, so I covered them in high temp tape. I used wire loom to keep the signal wires nice and neat and zip tied them where I could. It didn't turn out to bad. The total project time took about 2 hours. Maybe a little longer. I had to spread it out over the course of a couple days. Anything anyone else would of done differently? By the way, I'm now offically addicted to mods!

How much did you have to unbolt and remove in order to get the fender, signals and plate light out?

I saw a guy on the other site who adapted the factory plate light to work with this FE, but your solution is pretty cool. How did you wire those LEDs into the wiring formerly used for the OEM plate light? Did you just wire them in directly (3 into 1)?

I also have this FE kit, but also ordered the "proper" LED license plate light with the kit, which mounts on the little holes just below the FZ6 cut logo. I currently have the FAZR6FE kit mounted, which is (imo) the best available FE kit for the FZ6. The only thing that would 'improve' the FAZR6 kit would be smaller holes for mounting aftermarket LED flashers, and building in the two upper "ears" that would mount directly to my Scorpion's license plate support bracket, similar to the OEM fender.
The only reason I want to replace the FAZR6 FE kit is that the new FE kit (as in the excellent photos above) will allow me to eliminate the rather unsightly large horizontally-mounted "U" bracket that looks out of place with the Scorps and an FE kit.

Mark, you'll need a 4mm allen wrench for the two allen head bolts under the exhaust, and I used a 10mm ratchet wrench for the two hex head bolts on the side of the exhaust. This will allow the entire assembly to be loose and "fall" out. Now you will be able to flip it over and get to the under side of the original fender, to remove the signals and factory plate light.

As for the LEDs, your right, I just simply connected all three solid black wires (ground), and all three black with white tracer (positive) together seperately coming from the LEDs. Then cut the wires feeding the factory light, took my voltage meter, and with the key in the "ON" position, read each lead to ground to find which one had voltage. In other words, I placed the red lead from my meter on one lead from the plate light, the other black lead from my meter can go to any unpainted steel part on the bike ( I used the swing arm bolt). If you read voltage, you found the positive lead feeding the light. If not, you found the negative. Be careful though, I accidently hit the two wires together when I had the key on and blew a 10amp fuse. No big deal, at least now I know where the fuse holder is (right side pod). Hope this helps. To be honest with you, I choose this kit simply on price alone. It was cheap and easy to get. I will tell you though, it did not fit perfectly. I had to bend out the two mounting "tabs/ears" out slightly to get it to fit properly. I was a little nervous as aluminum tends to crack/tear easily.

I finally installed mine tonight. It took some doing for sure. Getting the stock signals out and the wires separated completely from the stupid metal inserts and rubber boots without cutting the wires was tough.

I bought a Dremel recently and got to try out the cutting wheel on these tiny metal inserts that are on the inside of the rubber boots. I also cut those boots off.

The license plate light is totally ghetto rigged until I figure out what do properly do with it. I ended up wiring it up pretty nicely above the license plate, right where it ought to be. We'll see how the whole thing wraps up once I get moving this weekend, and I'll take some pics.

Is there any way to get the stock plate light to mount on that FE kit? I've been looking at that kit to throw on my FZ, but I'm not sure what to do about the plate light. I am not near my bike right now, otherwise I'd just tinker around with it myself. I'm making a list of projects for me to work on when I get back stateside. :thumbup:

Just by looking at the pics, it may be a hard task getting the stock bulb to work properly with that kit....but there's always SOMETHING that can be done. May have to use my dremel as well! Haven't played with that thing since I prematurely cut a cast off my hand because I couldn't stand having it on me anymore.

i will be installing that kit tomorrow! i cant wait since my exhaust mid section (cat section) has been tied up at a local welding shop to have the catalyst removed then the pipe welded back together! just coated it with some high temp ceramic so i hope it holds up! i too will be rigging up my own license plate light!!! thanks for the pics!

Their not gonna light it up like Friday night at the local high school football game, but I think (and hope) that it might be bright enough that, at a distance, it might not draw to much attention. Now, if I'm lucky enough to have a local law enforcement officer pull up behind me at a red light....well, I guess time will tell http://600riders.com/forum/images/smilies/redface.gif

Have you seen the plate bolts that have the lights built in to the head? I would have used them, but their $22 dollars plus shipping. Also, Autozone has a l.e.d plate light that mounts using the exisiting plate bolts, but it is for a car plate and is therefore to long. Really, once you think about it, there aren't too many options. I'm not really sure what other members have done. MATT

Hello guys, wanted to show you how I installed this same kit on my bike.

I used the stock signals and license plate light. Here's the deal:

I removed the left side panel and unplugged the 4 wires (2 DC for the plate light, 1 square harness type connector each for the signals) and cut a couple of zip ties holding everything together. Then you can pull the wires through underneath the passenger seat to unbolt and remove the fender.

Regarding the turn signals:

Once you get it off, you unbolt the signals from the inside and they come off with a rubber boot around them. Inside this boot is a little steel insert which the wiring harness-like connector will not allow to slip off; rather than try to incorporate this into the new FE, or cut and rewire the harness connector, I carefully used a Dremel to make a tiny cut on the insert so I could bend the insert and get it off of the signal cord. I also used the Dremel and scissors to cut off the rubber boots.

Make sure you test out the right and left turn signals once you strip everything down! They are not marked as far as I could tell and you definitely don't want to signal left then turn right!

Regarding the license plate light:

I removed the license plate light assembly from its larger housing and wired that using (I think) 16 gauge electrical wire (with black wrapping) to wire it up through the screw holes in the assembly (the ones you unscrewed to remove it from the housing) around the little "T" under the exhaust tips and back around underneath that metal bracket. Yeah, that part of it could look better and probably I will try to figure out something else once I get a free moment to think about it.

I also heard that in CA we must have a red reflector on the back end of the bike, so I took one of the 3 available reflectors on the stock fender (1 on each side and one in the back) and bolted it through the larger central hole in the FE just below the light.

EDIT: I also shimmed the main bolts using some small washers, so the bracket wouldn't bend when I torqued the bolts.
