I have a seven seat SUV. We only use that if we are all going out. Seriously at the moment in the UK (world wide I’m sure) there is no point using it for short distance journeys as we live within walking range of pretty much anything. Diesel prices have gone mental, I consider myself a biker first and a reluctant cager. I love my bike, I would ride a 50cc if it were the only affordable option. Tomorrow I get to wear my new mesh jacket. I am such a kid it will keep me awake tonight.

My car just broke down and it is summer time. So, right now it is my only transportation... unless you count the DD when I go out. I am trying to fix my car because I am not a fan of riding in the rain if I do not have to. Also, grocery shopping every two days sucks.

However, I do technically own a car...

Do you know how much it would cost to fix the truck?

I was told it would cost about $1000 in labor and probably $ 500 for the engine but I recently decided to make a career change and plan to go back to school. So I was out of work for 3 months looking for a job that would pay well and let me go to school. I could not find one.

However, I went to work for Starbucks because of the benefits and figured I would have to live with very low pay for a few years. My first day on the job was when I wrecked and that added another month out of work and I am not even back to full time as my leg and ribs still hurt even loaded up on painkillers.

I landed on the elbow armor in my jacket- straight into my ribs on the left side and bruised my spleen, ribs, did something to my lungs and also separated some cartilage either between the ribs or between the wall of my ribs and my lungs. I had previously broken my ankle/leg and they said if it was not for all the titanium that it would have broken again. They also said it would have been better and less traumatic if I had broken my ribs and ankle?????????? Weird huh?

But what hurts the most is my bank account!!!! Going from $35,000 a year to $8.20 an hour with four months of no work. OUCH!!!!!

Right now I am just looking to sell the truck for parts.

I have a car also. My motorcycle is my primary means of transportation. I cant help much with the cold gear but my Joe rocket mesh jacket has a liner that is (mostly) waterproof. I think any rain gear will be good just worn over your gear. It will get torn off first in an accident/crash but the good stuff under will still save your hide. as far as the freediving fins.... wouldn't your camping/hiking backpack hold most of them to where they just poke out of the top? I only wear a backpack on the bike... I never really liked the look of hard cases/tank bags, etc

Yea, that is an idea. I could take my freediving gear I guess. Wetsuit, fins, mask, socks, towel, snorkel and the fins would just stick out of the pack. I have to say I would be nervous riding with a big pack like that. I would be endangering other people lives however if I took a tank with me though. When those things go off they are like mini car bombs and it would be too heavy. Sucks.

Having no wife, girlfriend, or kids, I find it pretty easy to get around without a car. The only hassle is I'm finding that I'm frequenting the grocery store more often, I can only put so much in my backpack. But if there is some unforseen injury, like a broken finger, hand, etc, and I can't ride, I will be in trouble. Otherwise, the money that I'm saving on insurance, title, and fuel is significant. I'm even saving money on the car wash as well.

I feel your pain.. lol. I live in TN, and the bike has been all I have had to go to school and work. when I got it i was 15 so as you probably would guess I was out all the time as much as I could. like everyone said layering is your friend. I found a good leather riding jacket with a liner "for winter" was the best "on the go" choice, as I too don't care to lug around crap all day. a good breathable light weight rain suit, and some good gloves. I never get over when someone comes into school and says "man its cold as hell outside" then they see your helmet. :Sport: good luck, Logan

I am looking at the whole grocery store thing as a good way to lose weight. I buy less so I cary less. I buy fresh since I go so often= less cans, less frozen. I am taking a really long time to heal from this wreck and I know it is because I am so out of shape and overweight. So the frequent shopping I am actually looking forward to.

Gotta love the toyota trucks. I've got a 2001 Tacoma and my fiance has a 2005 Nissan Murano...the murano has great brakes, acceleration, and handleing but the Tacoma will drag that murano up a mountain :D.

LOL So true...Im giving up my 98 V6 Tacoma 4x4 for a bike. I do 60 miles round trip and its killing me on fuel. with the FZ I should get 50mpg if I dont ride hard. I get 20-22 in the truck. Huge savings!

Me and my other half also have a family car, as she works three days a week and uses a bicycle and train for her work (her own choice), I can have the car on those days.
I myself work 4 days a week (so on one of her working days I'm at home).
This means I have access to the car for 2 working days. Genarally in the middle of winter I ride 50% of the time and the other times I take the car.

Here in holland the weather is generally rideable the whole year round, but in the few extreme cases (ice and snow) I can always take the car.

Obviously in the summer months I take the bike most of the time

I could also take the train to my work, which wouldn't make much difference in time, I hate to say it (being a defender of european values) but I hate public transport .

The FZ is my daily driver most of the time. I cage it when the ice and salt is on the ground. I have a Tundra 4x4 plus the wife's Avalon, my son's bike and a 95 Cobra. Needless to say, I can't use the excuse I have car trouble when I don't feel like going to work!

My main choice of vehicle to commute is my FZ6. But I live on two miles of gravel road so if the weather conditions are nasty but above freezing I ride my KTM EXC 450. My daily commute round trip is 50 miles. I also have a Nissan Frontier that I'll drive if I have appoinments outside of the bank.

If anyone can help me find a way to carry my hockey equipment including two sticks and/or my golf clubs, I will make my FZ6 the only thing I use! Let's say it will be my way of helping Al Gore save the planet (or just a really fricken fun way to bomb around)
