NorCal/SoCal ride 2011

Great looking route John! The first and last parts already have me yawning and shifting my butt around to look for a comfortable spot, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get to the good stuff.

Sorry to hear Mark! How's the bike? What turn was it in? How did the other rider do?

We'll be at the Streets of Willow next weekend... wish me luck!

Mark, sorry to hear about the injury. Will you need surgury? Figure 8 brace did wonders for me.

Imagine what it would be like if you were 6'3" ! Wear some bike shorts. But yeah, we are spoiled up here in NorCal....those SoCal guys love the slab. :D

I am officially out for this ride unfortunately. I was taken out by an unknown assh*le last Friday at a trackday at Willow Springs and have a broken collarbone. :(

Be safe guys and have fun.

Wow Mark very sorry to hear that. Can't you pull a Colin Edwards and just ride with plates holding you together?;) Seriously I hope you heal up soon.

Mark, that really sucks:(
Heal fast and hope you can make it for the dinner:thumbup:
Where is the dinner anywho, I would like to join also.

Jerry
As of right now I am planning that we all meet at Hofs Hut Restaurant in Buena Park. Probably start meeting up at 5:00PM and sit on the outdoor patio. The choice is because so many are staying within 2 miles of this and we need the room for our spread.

I can be in San Jose by 8 am or earlier. What time do you want to arrive in Buena Park? Around 5 or 6 ish?

Here are some route options, starting with the highest concentration of twisties roads and good scenery and ending with the quickest route:

417 miles of goodness, 10 hours of riding and we'd need to pack a lunch: MAP 1

460 miles, but less hours at just over 9. This route includes "Rossi's Driveway": MAP 2

447 miles, 9 hours, Rossi's driveway, no HWY 33, but some Malibu canyon riding thrown in followed by some beach cruising as we roll into LA like the pimps that we are: MAP 3

421 miles, 8.5 hours, similiar to MAP 3 but no Rossi's driveway: MAP 4

416 miles, 8.3 hours, HWY 33 included: MAP 5

414 miles, 7.75 hours, HWY 198 and HWY 33 included. This route is an ok compromise between back roads and making time. That is, it allows for a more leisurely pace but isn't quite as interesting as all the above: MAP 6

370 miles, 7ish hours, lots of HWY 5, a mile or two of dirt road: MAP 7

364 miles, 6.5 hours, tons of HWY 5: MAP 8

Ok, last one I swear...

Superslab highway the entire way, 361 miles, 6 hours, square tires: MAP 9

I don't really care what way we go so long as it's reasonably twisty. I'm not sure how many people will be heading down together but there are lots of bailout points for anyone that decides mid-route that they want to jump over on to the highway or vica versa.

About the room. I'd be willing to pay 1/3 of the room cost if you guys are willing to let me sleep on the floor and use the shower (I'd bring my sleeping pad). If not, that's cool...just throwing it out there. I usually camp but want to join the night-time festivities in the city with everyone so camping is not an option.

Hey Nate and Stacy,
I had lunch with Travis today and we agreed that route #8 might be a good compromise hitting Hwy 25 and hooking up with Stacy for the ride down, with Stacy meeting us around Kettleman City on Hwy 5. We'd like to get as early a start as to have us arrive in Buena Park around 3:00 or so to avoid as much of the rush hour traffic as possible. this would also give us some time to clean up and catch our breath before the Friday night dinner. How does this work for you guys? It's about a 30 minute ride from my place to Travis' in So. San Jose so we could plan backwards to get a starting time.

The 25 is a great route from Hollister to the 198.

I rode it two weeks ago and it can be fast and fun.

Ya gotta watch out for all of the little effen squirrels. Show no mercy and run em over. They will jump out on a corner and scare the crap out of you and then you will crash if you try to avoid them.

Just kidding....all life is valuable.... little effers.:spank:

That sucks Mark, feel better!

I think im out too. Cast is coming off on the fifth but i dont feel up to riding yet. Plus i wont risk riding a long ride after beeing out for so long. July came around fast!

Enjoy the ride and be safe dudes. Looking forward to the pics. That cop last year was a really nice person

Any chance you'll be able to make the Friday night get together? :D

Unless you want to be on the road by 7 am enroute to SoCal you're going to need to pack a lunch in order to get there by 3 pm. A 8 am departure from San Jose on a Friday, even with a packed lunch, will still make a 3 pm arrival a challenge. Are we thinking early afternoon traffic dumping into LA won't be too bad? I'm not too familiar with it.

I'm all about heading out early, packing lunch, and keeping going, but enjoying the ride down is pretty important to me. I think I can get ready for a 5 pm dinner pretty quickly. I think route 8 is a good way to get down there. I'm undecided on whether I will split from the group and pick up the 5 later or not.

How are we getting to the restaurant and back on Friday night? Anyone know how long of a walk it is?

EDIT - looks to be about a mile MAP Perfect.

EDIT 2 - I might leave my house in SF at 6:30 am, pack a lunch, ride solo, stop for fuel twice, and do this MAP Have not been riding the FZ6 much as I've been working on the house and doing other fun stuff...and I've got a baby due in August....so I wanna ride, I wanna ride, I wanna ride. Not sure yet....might do MAP 8 with the crew just for the fun of riding together. We'll see.

I know that I am here, comfortable in my chair in Socal and I am not riding it, I like your route the best. In the last two months, I have been riding the 33 a couple of times going to Nocal and back.

The 25 is awesome as is the 33. Weird cop stuff going on in Maricopa on the 33......go speed limit....

Less 5 is really more.

Yes, it takes longer but why are you coming to Socal? To ride twisties and have fun with friends, right? The 5 will give you nothing to discuss and talk about. Just a boring, yet fast ride.

Just another note. The 5 does not have a diamond lane for much of the ride thru downtown LA. The 405 does and it can be a great advantage regardless of the time of day. So the 33 to the 101 to the 405 to 110 to 91 is great to take advantage car pool lanes. Not much a difference in miles but with traffic on a Friday afternoon, it might be to your advantage

My 2 cents. Also, ad me to the dinner Friday night at Hofs, and Mimi's the next morning. Hopefully, I will have my FZ back together and ready to ride. Either way, I'm in

racebrooks, thanks for the freeway and diamond lane info, Travis and I were discussing the advantages of taking the 405 through L.A. and it sounds like that might be a good plan.

I get what you're saying Nate. The 3:00 ETA is just kind of a target time for Friday, and whatever route you decide to do for the ride down either solo or with us is cool.
On the way back Sunday I know that Travis and I will be up for a totally scenic and twisty all day ride back north. I'm pretty sure Stacy will be on board for that too.
