Not exactly discovering America here, but getting 38mpg on my last tank made me wonder if I'm really burning that much fuel by keeping rpm's around 7-8k at the lowest.
Last Saturday, my wife joined me on a 122 mile ride (2-up) and I kept the rpm's way low.. 4-5k most of the time. Average fuel economy... 44mpg. I'm sure it'd be another 2-3mpg higher if I was riding solo and without loaded top box.
So if you're going for best fuel eco, keep those revs down
