Bike-cop hit by car

If u cant stand watching it then dont watch it.

He is doing ok and is more or less fine, but the video is definitely quite vicious. Cop ended up with a tear in his vertebra and a concussion.

What happens:

1) There is an accident elsewhere in this city.

2) This cop is escorting the ambulance to the hospital.

3) He takes the point and tries to open up the merging lane of traffic.

4) He gets VERY aggressive and while still on his bike gets in front of a semi-truck that is pretty close.

5) Semi truck changes lane.

6) red car behind sees biker and moves over.

7) yellow car travelling behind red car sees biker very late and doesnt have the reflexes to get out of the way by changing lanes. Even if he had gotten out of the lane the car behind also doesnt see whats up ahead and also pretty much drives dead ahead straight.

8) yellow car slams on brakes and swerves but still clips the biker. car behind yellow car also hits bike.

My opinion is the cop made a bad choice here. Glad he is ok though. You live and learn. But there really should be better protocol for something like this.

Nonetheless the yellow car driver has pitiful reflexes.

That yellow car had nearly 4 seconds of clear view straight ahead to the parked cop bike. If you can't spot something bright and shiny on the road with flashing lights and a dude in a bright jacket like that waving his arms at you in broad daylight, then in my opinion, you are far too easily distracted and should never be allowed to pick up a set of car keys, let alone use them in the ignition of an automobile.

Having said that, the best time to move into that lane would have after the truck went through, as no one behind the truck can see you until it moves out of the way. Dunno if that'd help with the yellow car driver though. 4 Seconds....WTF?....Needs to buy himself a bus pass.

I hope the cop makes as full a recovery as possible.

One of those times when you see a cop doing something good to help someone out, and then getting caned for it.

I bet yellow car expected bike to move forward -- "I don't have to brake, he'll keep going and I'll miss him". Well he doesn't move so swerve right. Hit cop get out of car and say "I'm in deep sh** 'cause I hit a cop"!

Car behind yellow car is a moron for following too close to car ahead of him -- oops! that's how they do it in Massachusetts.

Personally, although the yellow car is at fault, I think the cop made a huge assumption that someone will see him and yield -- (dare I say it) "because he's a cop". Either way, I hope he's ok. Sadly, the yellow car driver will probably get a ticket for not stopping for a cop maybe $50.

This happened not so far from here, here's the Dutch story (in Dutch) the cop had a broken jaw, concussion and a fractured vertabrae but was in a stable condition (when this was written on 01 september 2009). The car driver was arrested.
I think the cop was blocking the road more than necessary but IMO the car should have seen him in time

I'm glad they arrested the driver. Yes the cop could have waited until the truck was past to pull out to block the lane, but I don't know what that yellow car driver was doing, he had plenty of time to get out of the way. The truck pulling in to the fast lane for no apparent reason should have been a heads up to everyone behind him, and the car directly behind him saw the cop and got out of the way no problem.

I found this Dutch story which explains that there had been a serious accident on the opposite side of the road and they were escorting a seriously wounded patient to hospital.

Twenty bucks says the driver of the yellow car was texting, dialing his/her cell phone, or adjusting their iPod. Phu*&$^%ing moron! That just pisses me off to no end!

Had to be a pretty sickening sight for his two motorcycle buddies coming up the ramp, too.

i think its misplaced though. it is not that he didnt see the cop. he does. his reflexes are lacking though. he does brake and eventually swerve. if any of us were driving the car we would have had AMPLE time to shoulder check, change radio station, and change lane in the time the yellow driver had. but this guy isnt us. he sees the cop, panics for the first second or so, then eventually slams brakes and swerves. he does not see the cop until the car in front of him changes lane and everything after that is just his poor driving skills....some people really are terrible drivers they dont know what to do.

or maybe he was texting or something who knows. personally i dont think so as the ambulance is terribly loud and coming down the off ramp.

I don't think the m/c officer's actions are really even necessary. Ambulance can just merge w/o any help. But, yellow car driver, as far as I'm concerned, may have deliberately plowed into the officer. Either that, is an extremely poor driver, had complete & total panic, or is drunk/loaded out of mind , or is texting/dialing, etc.(maybe all of the above?) And the general traffic, upon bike cop waving off motorists----geez, wouldn't you significantly (but cautiously) slow down even if already in the other lane? I ALWAYS slow things down (and consequently others slow down behind) especially, as happens often, other drivers in front just zoom past, don't slow down or anything in an active construction zone or some unusual development unfolding. I don't give a rip if I'm the only one (and on a motorcycle) to finally slow the whole flow down. This isn't NASCAR.

+1 IM thinking Texting also... Makes me think abotu all the people that tell me they could never ride a bike because they prefer not to pay so much attention the road...
The bike makes us humble and therefore safer drivers...

But I really don't see why the cop puts himself in this situation in the first place. I understand he wants to clear the way for the ambulance, but I think it is one stupid idea to park a bike in the middle of a highway lane with cars coming down at 80+ mph. I just think it was completely unnecessary. The ambulance could have merged just as well without him stopping traffic; they might have lost a couple seconds.. big deal..
I hope he recovers fast though.

Plenty of blame to go around. You should expect this of a car driver but I don't care what your title is you don't sit there on a motorcycle like this officer did. Park there and get off the bike if you must, but there was no reason for the risk he took. As a motorcycle rider and a trained officer he should have known better than this IMO.

Exactly what I thought, in the second film you can even see the emergency services on the other side of the road .
It also said that the trauma helicopter personel (already on the scene from the first accident) treated the guy and he was taken to Alkmaar infirmary.

It's not hate; it's more of a pragmatic recognition of the faults of car drivers, and how much that affects the least protected road users.

I think it's clear Yellow car driver expected the cop to get out of his way. I think he expected the cop to move, right up to when he hit him. He had an unobstrcted view of the LEO for at least 100 feet, and wasn't doing more than 20-30 MPH. Could have easily come to a complete stop......

Two people had their heads planted where the sun doesn't shine. The LEO assumed the driver would pay attention and stop. The driver assumed the LEO would pay attention and move.

The LEO got hurt, I think, because he was arrogant enough to think physics did not apply to him. He placed all his faith in the driver doing what he expected he would do. Obviously, a Bad Plan. (I'm very happy to hear he will probably recover...... I'm also happy to hear the driver that struck him has been arrested. I hope they throw the book at him for driving like a dumbsh*t.)

Flashing lights :Flash:, sirens (substitute loud exhausts here), neon clothing, and right of way are not enough of a safety net. We as riders have to assume that the auto driver is going to be completely numb to our right to live , and act accordingly. Stupid drivers outnumber smart riders 100's to 1. :spank:

We live and die by our wits. All it takes is a second of inattention to that fact, and the consequences can be at least traumatic......

The M/C cop is a MORON!!!! The yellow car driver is obviously mentaly impared either chemicaly or geneticly....they just happened to meet each other at the right time...they both were lucky enough to get out of this alive,and learned a very real lesson about how deadly a motorized vehicle can be.....on a side note an idiot M/C cop here in town liked to park behind bushes and radar speeders then he would step out in the road with his hand out for the vehicle to stop.....he did this to the wrong person a couple of years ago, spooked an old lady and she ran him over.....he got a few broken bones and learned not to step out into traffic anymore.....he is back on his bike now,and a little wiser I can garantee....

and this is why we DO NOT escort ambulances where i work! they can merge just fine and there is nothing i can do to make thier trip any faster! the only time we have ever escorted an ambulance was for a fellow officer that was injured. however depending on the circumstances we usually just throw them in the back of our car since we can get them to the hospital faster than waiting on a stupid ambulance!
