Is there any respectable horn out there that will mount (easily?) into the same spot as the stock horn and can be directly wired (i.e. not require a relay)? I'm thinking it might be better to get the occasional "stink eye" for accidental honking rather than a left front fender ...

Do a search for "stebel" and the like. You'll find plenty of info on selection of horns and mounting options.

For what it's worth, I have my Stebel mounted where the original stock horn is located. One bolt and it's good. I used part of the exhisting two wires for the horn to connect to the stebel and used a heavier gauge wire to go from the relay to the battery. I spent the extra 12 bucks and bought the wiring kit, which included the relay.

The Fiamm freeway blaster is a significant upgrade over the stock horn if you don't want to install the Stebel. Here's how I did it:
