Zombie beginner bike returns to haunt me

I thought I got rid of that thing but got an $86 fee notice from the DMV because apparently the the title was never transferred by the buyer.

I must have messed up declaring the sale. :spank: I have all the docs to prove I sold the bike last year though.

maybe he was trying to avoid paying the registration and title fees? Did you give the guy your old plates too? Isnt the title transfer the BUYERS responsibility? I change that ASAP so I can prove I own it and the seller cant regress or something silly.

Id hope with the documentation that they would just turn to the buyer and it would be his problem.

You're right. It even says in the forms that DMV will not update ownership records until title transfer (buyer).

I'm still responsible for declaring the sale. It wouldn't have mattered had the buyer promptly transferred the title.

Whoa, I need to look into the laws here. I don't want to get fined, or charged for property tax on an old Honda I sold a few months back.

That makes sense you have to declare it I always thought it was all on the buyer, but that makes sense. I will certainly keep this in mind next time I make a transaction.

Hopefully they dont make you jump through too many hoops to get it straightened out.

This state doesn't do a sales tax on vehicles changing hands of private owners. Historically the NEW owner is only responsible for title transfer and the BOS simply floats with no regard to the state. Some DMV offices want it to change the title others seemingly don't care even though they made a form for transfer.

It only comes into play when buyers don't register the vehicle in their name after the sale and we get crap in the mail like this. Then we use the BOS to clear our names. But I should double check that.

Just got back from an emergency visit to the DMV.

They weren't that surprised and figured that the new owner would do the transfer when the tags are expiring, which is what prompted this situation.

Of course the new owner could simply use counterfeit or stolen tags on their plate for all I know.

Technically I still own it in their system I guess, but now it's flagged as sold. Glad the new owner didn't rack up any speed camera tickets because they would have all gone to me.

One thing I learned is that I would much rather buy a bike with higher mileage and good service records than a low mileage bike that might have sat unattended in a garage etc.

The things that failed with this bike were due to just low quality. It was a Hyosung. It had it's good points but I'll never buy another. Yamaha's FZ6 is night and day in terms of quality.

I'd rather pick up a lower miles bike because the engine is the one big expensive thing I can't thoroughly check nor do much about if it has serious problems.
