Winters in the basement...

ok, so i know some of you guys store your bikes in the basement over the winter, Looks like the house Keira and i are looking at has no place for a garage, so i would like to know how you all get your bikes into the basement, it is not a walkout, but does have a bulkhead with a very stable stairs... can it be done or am i asking for the bikes to get dropped down the stairs and wrecked, as well as myself...

it will be a brand new house, and 2 bikes would be much better in the basement (workshop that I will be building) so that i can tear them down over the winter and do some in depth maintenance on them.

I would not take the bikes down a set of typical basement stairs. If they were concrete stairs leading from a garage, then it might work. Trying to balance 500 lbs of bike on a staircase is asking for trouble. Besides, how would you get them UP in spring? Good luck riding on a staircase. I usually take my bikes apart in October and then bring the engine, rear drive unit et cetera down when I am going to work on it. Since my FZ6 is new (4000 miles), I will just do a once over in spring, a great way to break the Ides of March!

You'll have a rough time with clearance on a set of bulkhead stairs. Is this being built? Can you change the plans? If so, I'd have them put in a small set of doors and landscape over to them so you can drive straight in.

If you can't put a garage there and have four vehicles, wouldn't you forgo this purchase and find a place more suitable? Just my thoughts...

My dad and his father used to store their Bultacos in their basement and all they had was wooden stairs. It is possible just make sure you have a few friends that can come over and help you out in exchange for :iconbeer::iconbeer::iconbeer:

I was thinking that you would need friends to help you get in and out, but the stairs shoud hold the weight if they are built correctly. Think about when people more refrigerators, freezers, pianos, and gun safes into houses...Its going to be tough knowing that you cant take the bike out if it is pretty though.

Is it feasible to change it to a walkout? You could buy a bigger shed now and run some electricity to it. I'm just thinking moving bikes up and down stairs for one season... ok. Moving them every season... nope.

I'm with FZ6inNH on this one - I kick my own a$$ repeatedly for buying a house without a garage and no real place to put one - especially in a market where changing houses is tough.

Unless there's some compelling reason that would overcome "I wish I had a big garage" everytime you think it (it will be a lot) I would seriously consider continuing to look.

I used to store my V45 Magna in the basement. All I had was a bulk head as well. The only real challenge is getting the header over the lip to the stairwell without damaging it.

As suggested...a couple of friends and offer lots of :iconbeer::iconbeer::iconbeer:

Ride it down, ride it back up. What's the big deal? Haven't you seen Terminator 2??? But seriously I've been thinking the same thing- my basement steps wouldn't do it so I'm building a small ramp for the side door when it starts to snow. The side door leads to the basement but has no stairs at all, just a five foot drop. It's a safety measure for burglers. Congrats on the new house, great time to buy, great time to finance.

I have a garage that's just BARELY big enough for my 2 trucks and FZ6. If I could do it over, I would go for a bigger garage and smaller house, or a place with a pole barn. It may be smart to keep looking unless you absolutely have to buy a place right now. Regretting a home purchase isn't fun.
