Hi guys,

Just had a baby and need to park it for a while and just ride a little dirt bike around my town for fun. What is a reasonable trade in value for a 2009 with a set of leo vince pipes, a power commander, heated grips, puig windscreen, new chain, new rear and front sprocket, new rear brakes and rotor and $500 in new rubber. Average scuff marks/scratches and 32k miles on it. KB says $3500 but that's without the new parts/mods/tires. Thanks guys, looking at a yamaha tw200 or xt250 for around town.

Unfortunately aftermarket parts don't help with a sale unless the buyer really wants that stuff or they just will believe the value you tell them. You could argue to a new motorcycle buyer that it is all worth about $4500, at least that is the most I would consider giving you for it to feel like it was a fair price and I still got a good deal. I know that probably doesn't even add up to the amount of parts and mods you put on it, but that is where I would be at considering what else is available.

Also if you're trading in you have to figure the dealer will want to make something on the bike. Retail that bike would go for $4000-5000 (mileage is high for what I've seen but the aftermarket parts are an argument for more money) and you figure they want to make at least $1000 profit. They will say it will cost them at least $200 to have the shop go over the bike for a general safety inspection and clean it up to put it on the showroom floor. So, the dealer will probably offer you $3000-3500 would be my guess.

Congratulation with the baby, and GLWS

contrary to popular belief, mods DONT increase value. generally something being stock has the greatest value. mods are just an expression of personal tastes. tires are the same way, they should be at least 70% when selling something, if not its a barter point for the customer. with 30K+ miles, id say somewhere between $3500-4000 is about right.

Nobody is going to give you anymore for the Leo and PC, so you should just sell them to me :D I don't think you should have a problem getting $3500 for it, but I doubt much more with the high miles on it.

Any reason you are looking at the TW200 or XT250? They are PAINFULLY slow dirt bikes. I don't know the rules in your state, but can you make a normal dirtbike street legal (can't in Wisconsin :/)? If not, I would say go with at least a Suzuki DRZ400S. They make about double the horsepower a XT250 makes (around 40 vs around 20). I think Husqvarna and KTM make some 450-500cc street legal dirt bikes also, but after that you are looking at bikes that are considerably bigger and heavier in the 650 class.

Your best bet is to sell the mods here separately get some $$ make it stock and see what you get i bet its the same as if the mods are on it.

If you sell that exhaust let me know :)

I recently purchased my FZ6 and I was shocked by how many people would try to sell their bike and make me pay for all the mods that they wanted. One guy was trying to sell his 2005 FZ6 for $4000 because he had various mods. I told him, "take them off then, I want the bike." Needless to say, we didn't make a deal.

If you are able to sit on the bike for awhile then you might find somebody who falls in love with your bike for whatever reason. I think I would pay, at most, $3300 though. Mainly because 30000 miles concerns me. I know the FZ6 *can* get to six figures for miles, but there is no way to know exactly how those 30000 miles were accumulated. One owner of the bike I looked at said his 20000 miles were mostly highway. I talked to him some more about random stuff then asked how often he went on vacations with the bike. "I've taken it out of town once or twice," he replied. "So where did you get those highway miles from?" He then fumbled his words because he realized I caught him on his lie. He probably hot-rodded the hell out of it.

I know that is a lot of information, but I thought it might be helpful. I agree with the other posters, try to sell your mods separately, because most people, I would think, are unwilling to pay you for the customizations that you wanted.

funny that people say HIGHWAY miles lol, at higher rpms is when more damage occurs and start up of course

Really? I didn't know that. I am a complete newbie to motorcycles. I would ask them "Are most of the miles highway, or stop and go in-town driving?" So, maybe people would answer thinking that I wanted them to say highway miles? Haha. Well, that is good news to hear because my dad is looking into motorcycles now too. I will have to tell him that highway miles are not such a great thing.

How is highway riding done at high RPMs? You could lock the throttle at 60mph in 6th gear and let the thing run for years without problems. Stop and go traffic always causes a lot more wear and tear than highway riding does on a bike. Every time you stop you put wear on the brake pads slowing down, the clutch going down gears coming to a stop and going up gears when you get going, the chain and sprockets take more wear from shifting gears, etc... Regardless of all that, it takes 100 hours to go 6000 miles at 60mph vs 400 hours with a 15mph average riding in town. That's 300 extra hours the engine is running while putting on the same number of miles.

Either way, how it's taken care of makes a bigger difference than how many miles it has (to a point of course).

That's what I like to call "LOGIC BOMB". good info

Well said. I wanted to say something along those lines when I read this thread, but I could not have said it that well.

I'm not looking to argue but, your rpms at for are lower than 6th gear at any highway cruising speed, plus increased load and suspension movement at 50+ mph will be much more wear, miles are miles doesn't matter how they occur they are some form of wear its just an indication of how much the vehicle was used

When accelerating from a stop light your still 1-3 k rpms which is half of the speed heat and friction at highway speed

Brake pads and clutch friction plates are wear items they are meant to wear and be replaced so why are that point?

Also pads rest against the rotor so at highway speeds would you not be slightly wearing them?
Two sides to everything
Miles are miles the more of them the more wear you have

I hate to go against the grain here but $3,000 is about maximum to expect considering the mileage.

32K miles may not be a lot for an FZ6 but it is a lot for a motorcycle considering that 75% of FZ6's for sale have <20K miles on them. I have seen 2007-2009's with 7K-15K miles going for $3,500.

Personally if I were in the market I'd take a stock mint FZ6 with low low miles over one with mods and high miles at the same price.

Im with Fizzer, lower miles older bike > newer bike with more miles. And as you can see we are vulchers when it comes to buying aftermarket mods, your bike is taken apart and you only mentioned that you're thinking about getting rid of it.

side note.....PM me about your exhaust ;)

Think if it were me personally best I'd offer would be 2800... Just when you look at the miles there's a lot of bikes out there with less miles in and around 3k... Suppose it also depends where your located.

Just my realistic POV .02

GLWS!!!
