What was your first bike?

my first bike was another honda transverse twin. i had a gl650 interstate. it wasn't the best bike for me to learn on, but it was a great bike.

i'm curious what everyones first bike was

Brand new 2009 blue FZ6 and I couldn't be happier with my decision

also do you think it was better to start out on something smaller before getting the FZ6?

No, but I think it's a matter of self control. This bike is powerful and it can get you in big trouble if you're not careful (of course, this is the same for lots of bikes).

Before buying this bike I read many articles about starting with a 250, and build up from there. I feel very comfortable in this bike and, in my case, I do not justify the extra step of getting something smaller to outgrow it very soon. Of course, everybody is different and has different opinions.

If a teenager would ask me about this, most likely my advice will be to start with something small, but once you get past those years I do not see any problems getting an FZ6 as a first bike.

16 years old and I bought an FS1E DX
It had all the usual go faster bits, like a Micron pipe,Dellorto Carb.
I was king of the fish and chip shop posers (Well,I thought I was anyway) :D

Not my bike btw but exactly the same ;)

1989 Honda NX125 (first bike) - that started the addiction.
1988 Honda NX250 (in the garage)
1993 Honda XR250
1991 Kawasaki ZX6 (first real street bike)
2001 Honda XR650R (in the garage)
2003 Yamaha YZ250R (in the garage)
2007 FZ6 - Red (in the garage, actually loaded in my truck right now. I am headed to grattan raceway this weekend for my first 2 track days!! I am so fuggin excited!)

I had an old 1984 Yamaha XT250 (I think that's the year). I had that until I was probably 18 or so, and then got rid of it when I went to college.

My 2007 FZ6 is my first street bike.

196x 305cc Honda Dream, bought in 1964 with an unexpected $300 clothing allowance from the US Air Force. Rode it for a few months until I wasn't scaring myself, and then bought a brand new 1965 Triumph Bonneville.

from what I've read this was the first V-twin that honda ever made!! at least in the states. The thing was a pig to work on because the engine is literally the size of a small car engine. If you have to do anything motor related to the bike you essentially have to drop the engine. Fun to ride though.

that's true, but if taken care of these bikes have been known to go 150-200+ thousand miles. and because of the shape it makes some things easy to get to and work on (spark plugs, heads, etc.). i'll though that i'm not looking forward to dropping the engine in my project cx when that time comes. the engine turns over but i don't know it's age. so have to open it and see what's going on in there.

2007 Suzuki GS500F. Easy to ride, flickable, solid torque but dead at high rpm (for my own good, I suppose).

1979 Kawasaki KE100

I was 13 and drove it around the yard.

It was identical to this example pic...

Ya it really is a great bike. And it is amazing how easy the engine comes out of that thing. If i remember right, it pivots down about the rear mount bolts and rests on the ground. pretty cool engineering on that thing.
