Thread Titles - Make Them Descriptive

When perusing the new threads, I find that many are not descriptive enough.

For instance: "Help", or "I'm having trouble...". Personally, I don't even open those threads since I don't know what they're about. I'm not trying to be harsh, I just don't have time to read threads that don't get my attention. So please think about the title of your thread and make it informative (but still succinct) so that we can see at a glance what's inside.

I guess this would loosely fall under the "Make your comments count" rule in the forum rules.

Let's keep the forum fun and informative!

I agree with your view, Travis. With the heavy traffic that this forum now sees, I scan titles with the same mental filter as you do. If the title is generic it's ignored.

Same here. If your post topic is,"ZOMG HELP!!!!!111!!!ONE!!" you can be assured that I won't even bother to read it.

And while I'm ranting, when did paragraphs go out of style? If your post is all mashed together into one monstrous paragraph, I won't read it. Why? Because it's hard on my eyes.

Exactly!

Please also use punctuation (at least some). Lack of punctuation might make typing faster, but it can be a b*&ch to read and might get your post looked over by someone who could have helped you.

Lack of punctuation and spelling errors are my pet peeve. The post editor has a spelling checker, please use it!

Would like to disagree regarding punctuation and spelling. As some people may not be as educated as some and may not know when to insert, commas, quotation marks and such. So I think you just have to read thru this.

Also, if they are not that good with the spelling, how do they they know it's not correct. We don't need spelling nazi's. Everybody makes mistake's.

This is a biker forum, not an English language course.

Agree with the thread titles bit.

I think that's a good point, and I agree that posts don't have to be perfect. As you pointed out, this isn't an English course, but a couple of periods, capitals, and paragraphs can really make a difference in a post :thumbup:

In case you already know, you can hold your cursor over the title of a post to get the first few sentences in the topic.

What irritates me is when the TITLE is poor - "What's this thing?"

Only to hold my cursor over it and get - "thar is a screw a thred wit hangen hoss's and..."

This is exactly what I do with all of the threads that I am considering reading. Holding the cursor over the title, shows the first couple sentences of the OP's post.

While this is true, and I agree, I will point out that:

a runon sentence is very difficult to read and when you are looking for help with something you should probably put in the effort to make it look like you are asking in a way that people can understand after all you are trying to have people help you with something online that might need to be seen in person to be understood or at least written in a way that is descriptive and clear so if you are doing this you should probably make an effort to at least use sentences and if you dont know punctuation at least put a few enters where your thoughts change that way we know what you are talking about i am pretty sure that everyone on this forum has passed first grade though i could be wrong which is where you start reading and knowing that a period denotes the end of a sentence so when your sentence ends maybe you should use one

as for misspellings....misspelled words = no big deal.
Purposely misspelling things to come across as "gangsta" (not common at all on this forum) = annoying.

i think that's more what they meant by spelling and punctuation, not common errors, or internet shorthand.

Well, since this has expanded into a general gripe session, I have one... double posts.

There are currently two threads about Michael Jackson started a minute apart. That is understandable, but there are also two threads about last weekend's superbike results, in two different forums, started days apart, and the second one by the administrator!

Surely it's not too much effort to search your intended topic?

And no disrespect but simply posting a link isn't very informative.
