A nice rotor lock is less than $10 on ebay... I always throw "el cheapo" over my bike. Mainly because this is WI and weather changes every 15 min... 3 steps that have worked so far...(knock on wood) Lock fork, rotor lock, cover. That and don't piss off the diverse crowd walking around campus at 3am... CV brings up a good point. I got a cheapo rotorlock, and soldered a bell to it so I remember to take it off... No issues so far... fingers crossed.

What good is a rotor lock going to do???? They are just going to drag it and throw it into a van or truck. Two normal size guys can move a bike no problem at all.

I think a big fat chain attached to something is really the only thing that makes a significant difference.

hate to burst your bobles about the disc locks. but now people just put two pipes threw the front and back rim and lift them on a truck. at lest thats what they do here but a disc lock is better then nothing. best thing to do is a alarm.

My bike's usually in pretty hard to reach places, but not impossible. Steering lock, disc lock and alarm are all you're really allowed to do legally. Snakes and electricity are frowned upon. There's also those doovas you can bolt to the ground to secure a lock to as well.

I use a disc-lock with a movement alarm built in.. 110dB of screaming when it goes off.
I also chain it to the carport when at home, the $15 bolt-cutters would go through it, but it is a deterrant.

If you get some sort of disc-brake mounted thing, be darn sure there is some sort way to reminding you it's there. I have a simple one, but I'm too afraid to use it. I'm certain I'd forget it was there and make it about half a wheel revolution before remembering it.

You have 2 choices here.
Get the disc lock with an alarm so it goes off before you move the bike.
Get a length of brighly coloured cord to fasten to your lock and loop ot around your grip so you can see it.

I have rode off with mine still attached...twice...and have saved the bike twice. That is why I have the disc lock with alarm on.

I would not even bother with a disc lock without an alarm. Spend the little extra and get the alarm. Noise makes these night time thieves clear off quickly.

That is all we can do, make it a bit more difficult for them to take your bike.

Burglars and thieves will always take the easier option. So make yours look like the harder option.

Put a step-up transformer/inverter to several thousand volts on your battery with a switch to disconnect ground and install the high voltage on the chassis, instead. Just listen for the screams!:justkidding:

Sigh, seriously though, it would be nice if we humans could evolve past this sort of crap. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Hope things turn out well. I think a cover is probably not a bad idea. I have the CycleShell and feel like it is a great theft deterrent.

We don't have many "safe" parking options for our bikes either. We do the best we can by parking under a light and covering our bikes. We don't have anything to chain our bikes to so I chain them together with this:New York Chain w/Evolution series 4 Disc Lock

I run the chain through both front wheels and lock the lock over the mid section of the chain creating a figure 8. Sure a determined theif can still steal them but he would need to steal both motorcycles while both front wheels are chained together with minimum slack.

My drawn out point is a determined theif can and will steal anything so anythign you can add to deter them helps. A cover, a cover alarm, a disc lock, a disc lock alarm, a chain, a bike alarm... they will all help but the key to maximizing the deterent is to make the security visible. An alarm is great but add a chain or a lock that is visible to the theif.

This was somebody's way of wishing me Merry Christmas. They tried to steal my bike by lifting it by the handle bars. They twisted and warped the handle bars in the process. Bike is not drivable. I filed a police report and already filed an insurance claim online.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? Is there anything else I should or could do?

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

Tomorrow is the 1 yr anniversary of my house being broken into and all the fun that went with it (ins deductable, not having bay doors from the deck that would lock or shut for that matter because of the holidays, stolen gifts etc. Just scream - vent - then shrug it off and do what you can but do better than I did of trying to get over it. RRRRrrr MOST people suck but the ones that dont are pretty good people.

I filed a hit and run on my bike a few months ago. Hopefully you have good insurance...liability only got me nothing except a front blinker that keeps breaking off again since I don't wanna buy a new fairing piece yet.

That's the sad part. I'd wager most thefts involve people you know in passing. I put a cover on my bike along with the lock and it's not visable from the street. So whoever tried to steal mine knew it was there, so they probably lived in the same complex as well. Same thing probably happened here. Humans being can be pretty crappy.
