2005 fz6 w 30500 miles:
stem bearing was out of adjustment (loose) when I bought the bike. last night I. used the small hammer and drift method to tighten the adjustment nut (top bearing) and snugged (12lbs or so) the lock nut above that. after tightening the tree nut to 90lbs, tested again and it was smooth travel l to right. no shake from grabbing the fork lowers and moving them fore/aft whith the from wheel off the ground.
short test ride with a cuple of heavy breaking stops confirmed its still adjusted well.
I do not have the proper socket for the adjustment and lock nuts, but can make one if its a critical torque setting as I'm a machinist.
question:
will this be a good method or is the torque on this bikes setup so critical it will over/under tighten quickly ?
note, I'm fairly handy with torque and when to stop with things.
