My mom called me over the weekend (which she never does)...she just wanted to tell me about this guy on a "crotch rocket" (ACK!!!! Hate that term) that was doing 120mph and a lady pulled out in front of him. He broadsided her and got thrown into another car (he died on impact of course). But then she had to go into MAJOR detail, which I will not share, (my step dad was called to the scene) about his injuries and I absolutely did not want to hear it. I'm sure if she had been on the scene, she would've taken pics and e-mailed them to me and probably tell me that I'm going to end up like that some day.

Everytime I go for a ride, I call her up wanting to tell her about it, but she says," I don't want to hear it." It pisses me the F off! Anyways, I just get tired of her calling me up to try and scare me.

no doubt, its not going to force you to stop riding its just going to make for an unecessarily unpleasant moment and tenseness when you dont need it. if youre not a safe rider a nagging relative isnt going to get in your head one way or the other.

i usually just go into great detail about cancer and cell phones or bicycle rider accidents or something and with my great ability to drone on in detail for a lengthy period of time without saying anything actually substantial i usually bore them into submission haha

If your mother wants you to be so safe then perhaps she can help you get a car?
Or maybe she can buy you some REALLY NICE motorcycle gear?

my parents used to do that (cut out newspaper articles, call me up and ask if I'm okay because they "heard of an accident", etc). Then they realized that there is a difference between a motorcycle rider who takes precautions like good gear, following laws and obeying (within reason) posted limits. Most of the stuff that is noted on the news is a biker going 100+ mph in shorts, t-shirt and sunglasses. Once they realized I don't do that, they stopped with the lectures. I still call if they know I'm going on a long ride, just so they know I'm safe, but they don't worry like they used to.

For a joke (to get her back).... Dress up like you were just in a mangled bike accident (Halloween costume if you will)... Arm hanging off, guts falling out, blood everywhere and go knock on her front door....

The CHP has a magazine that I believe is quarterly and it is pretty bad in terms of vehicle accidents (mostly cars). They hold nothing back in terms of the pictures. If you can befriend an officer you may be able to get a copy of one. Give the copy to your mom and ask her if she is going to stop driving because of what she has seen in the magazine.

My Mom hates it too but is not verbal at all. She knows I take all the precautions and I'm not the guy out there doing triple digits.

Keira is spot-on. Nearly all the accidents are two things, squids being squids or something you cannot foresee or control, meaning someone runs you down out of nowhere. Those of us who are respectful of the bike, aware of our surroundings and properly geared for the accident are not the ones to be concerned about.

My oldest (23 yr old son) fully admits he cannot and will not get a bike in any shape or form. He knows he'd die on it because he has no self-control and loves speed. He has two speeds, zero and full throttle. Although he is calming down some and needs to to get his license back for keeps. ;)

Unfortunately Mom's will never be happy with their kids putting themselves in danger, How long have you been riding?

It took my mom about 2 years before she realized that i was being as safe as possible and she was more happy to see how happy riding made me than sad that i was taking risks...

Im lucky so far as the overprotective parents are concerned. I got my FZ6 this past week (first bike!) and havent driven my jeep since! My mom was really worried and told my dad this, but never showed me that she was very concerned. I am still in the process of getting all my gear (difficult getting stuff that fits because i am tall 6'4 180 lbs). But she recognizes the fact that i know what kind of dangers i can get into, and am cautious of them. I even sent her a copy of the Hurt report. So long as you are aware and respect the hazards, i think riding a motorcycle can be just as safe as driving a car.

Know what you are getting into!

Sorry that happened Janette.

I usually respond with some sort of long winded insane ramble about people burning to death concious trapped in thier cage. I am not very nice though.

My mom hates it too.. she didn't even talk to me for 3 days when I got the bike.

It is dangerous I'll admit, but I take as many precautions as I can to be safe out there. The only time I let her rip is on the highway without any cars around me.

Thanks, I may borrow this technique! Or go with the trapped and drowned variant.

No grief from the parents, but seems I can't talk about cycles with a non-rider without them relating the "I have a friend of a friend who died on one..." tales.

From now on whenever people start with a story like that i'll cut them off. All it does it put negative suggestions in our minds and we dont need any of that crap. Yes people fall and die on bikes, but people also slip, fall down their home stairs and die as well. I believe that if its your time its your time and thats that. I have fallen in the past so i know what i'm getting myself into. People dont help when they do that! All they do is project fear, i have trained my mind and just disregard this info, as we all know when we ride bikes you have to throw away any fears, doubts or you'll never enjoy a ride...

My GF was an Emergency Room RN for many years (she teaches/writes now) and hates MC's from all the carnage she's seen. She's "tolerating" my bike but will not get on it with me.
Yesterday we went up to Snowbasin Ski Resort, they have concerts, microbrew and BBQ on Sunday afternoons thru the summer, and we ran into a couple of our good friends, whom we haven't seen since my band broke up. They were both in Harley black, and had both gotten MC's themselves and talked about it the whole time.
My GF was kinda quiet on the drive home.

All mums hate it..but they all hate your girlfriends and would be horrified at the fact you actually have sex.

So what do you give up...bikes...girlfriends or sex....or MUMS.

Hmmm, get this. My folks come down from NY to NC for a visit and see that my GF has her Katana in the garage. My Dad asks if it's mine and I say no its hers. His somber reply was " I think motorcycles are dangerous and you would be better to never get on or near one." Of-course, he was probably thinking about that 8pm call from NC to NY in 1994 when my older brother died crashing his Ninja600.
This was the same brother that had totalled 3 cars before he ever got on 2 wheels. :shakehead: Where as I was always the cautious one. I miss Rob and I know my Dad misses him more. But, he and I were always different people and I learned a lot from his mistakes. However, my Dad doesn't see it that way.
I picked up my FZ6 3-weeks later. It's been 3 months and still haven't told my folks I'm back on 2. :don'tknow:

Oh, I alsmost forgot. My parents also didn't like me joining the ARMY at first either. But I did that at 22 and I'm 33 now. They are incredibly proud of my military service even though they worry about my safety. I'm hoping that they will feel the same about my riding also. That they will be a little worried but proud that I am a prepared, smart, and safe rider.

PS. My mom never likes any of my Girlfriends either:D.
