Reading Riding in the Zone (by Ken Condon) lately, I had come across a rider risk assessment. I am curious about where people sit in this survey.

answers are based in numbers. Add up numbers in parentheses and post you score within the poll.

Questions
1) How often do you use your helmet?
a) never (5) b) sometimes (4) c) always-non DOT (3)
d) Always open-faced helmet (2) e) Always full-faced (1)

2) How often do you wear full-coverage riding gear?
a) Never (5) b) rarely (4) c) sometimes (3)
d) frequently (2) e) always (1)

3) What stage is your riding training at?
a) None (5) b) MSF Beginner in distance past (4)
c) recent MSF beginner or ERC (3) d) MSF and Frequent Practice (2)
e) MSF, Practice, and track school (1)

4) How often do you overall practice your riding skills (beyond just a weekend ride)?
a) Never (5) b) rarely (4) c) sometimes (3)
d) often (2) e) frequently (1)

5) How often do you ride at night?
a) often (5) b) occasionally (4) c) sometimes (3)
d) rarely (2) e) never (1)

6) How often do you pass on a double yellow?
a) often (5) b) occasionally (4) c) sometimes (3)
d) rarely (2) e) never (1)

7) How often do you find yourself influenced by 'peer pressure'?
a) often (5) b) occasionally (4) c) sometimes (3)
d) rarely (2) e) never (1)

8) How often do you utilize strategies for being seen?
a) Never (5) b) rarely (4) c) sometimes (3)
d) frequently (2) e) always (1)

9) How often do you ride after drinking some alcohol?
a) Occasionally (5) b) rarely (4) c) after waiting 1 hour per drink (3)
b) after waiting 2 hours per drink (2) e) never (1)

10) How often do you speed (greater than 15 mph (24 kph))?
a) often (5) b) occasionally (4) c) sometimes (3)
d) rarely (2) e) never (1)

Please be honest with the answers

10-14 = least amount of risk =
15-22 = low amount of risk =
23-28 = low/moderate risk = :(
29-35 = moderate risk = :spank:
36-42 = moderate/high risk = :squid:
43+ = high risk = :ban:

(wow, took an hour to do this, lol:D)

hope you enjoyed this and have a great next ride

27 whoops :)

I always wear full protective gear, never drink, practice my skills regularly, but I'm not focused on being visible, and I speed the hell out of the limits :)

Good wake up call! I am low-moderate amount of risk. Before buying the FZ6 I was probably low but now I don't like speed limits. :)

I got either a 17 or a 21. I wasn't sure how to answer the full-coverage gear question. I always wear everything but leather pants when I ride (helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, and soon Icon Leg Armor). If that doesn't count and full leathers are the ideal answer, then never.

no, it is just as full protective equipment. helmet, jacket, boots, thick jeans/riding pants, and gloves.

i was at 23... low/moderate risk.. i would say thats a fair assesment.. just have to work on practicing my skills and not speeding so much.. oh and those pesky double yellow lines... :)

I scored a 25, but I said never to all of the riding gear. I do not have any pants or armor for the lower half. However, I would like to get the jeans.

Also was not sure about the skills practice. "just on the weekends" I commute a lot, so would that be considered practice, or parking lot skills only practice?

Last, the trying to be seen question. I always feather the brake before I hit it to stop, and use my signals. Does that count?

If these count, then I am a 22.

However, I would like to get the jeans.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but don't waste money on the "riding jeans" because they barely offer more protection. If you don't want to go with straight-up leather pants, get a pair of Bohn Adventure Shorts and some Icon Field Armor Leg. Between that and your boots you'll have much more protection against impacts AND abrasion. Its also a little less conspicuous than armored leather pants so if you are going somewhere you don't look like an uncomfortable leathery tool.

Just my $.02

agreed... mis, i picked up a set of new tourmaster overpants on ebay.. ill have to post up some pictures and a review, but they are awesome... comfy and seem to over excelent protection.. havent had to "try" them out, but seems like they would hold up...

I disagree with how some of the questions are scored. I believe someone who wears a full faced helmet all the time should not be penalized for receiving a point as well as full gear. And how does someone who rides at night, be penalized too. If they think riding at night is a greater risk than riding during the day, you would have to seriously reconsider that stat as I believe the number of motorcycle accidents during daylight hours exceeds versus the night. If they are referring to the visibility factor, reflective gear should offset that. Plus there is usually less traffic. Oddly enough, there wasn't a question about riding in weather related conditions, such as rain. Or did I miss that.

22 for me! That sounds about right, my riding buddies think I ride like a grandma, so it seems pretty accurate....just all those "rarely" or "occasionally" answers did me in...I can not honestly say I NEVER or ALWAYS do anything....

As a side note, Ken Condon is one of our local trackday instructors and an all-around good guy. Thank you for supporting his book.

I scored an 18 "low risk" but I'm kinda with VR on the questions/standards - seems like some double-dip the same behaviours and I almost can't imagine actually riding frequently and being able to score much lower.

I think you get a point on every question regardless of what you answered because riding is a risk no matter what, full helmet or no. The only way to score zero would be to lay in bed all day :D And I agree that night riding really isn't that dangerous, and I think that the quiz definitely could have used more questions. It's just a fun quiz though! I think most everyone on this forum are safe riders anyways...

I scored a 14, just made it as safe. Four 2's and the rest 1's...

I ride to enjoy it. If I'd taken this same test 20 years ago, I'd have scored :ban:

I've learned a lot over the years and the days of living foolishly are long gone. I'm saving that for the track.

I'm eiher a 17 or 21 also. Depends on how to measure two questions. I have both a full face helmet and 3/4 helmet. I use the full face on the FZ6 but use the other other helmet on my cruiser and wing.

I always wear a helmet (once or twice have not) eyewear where needed, boots, riding jacket, and gloves. Ocassionally chaps. sometimes substituting a vest in place of a jacket. Don't usually wear pants armor, but now have a pair of draggin jeans.

20 here. Seems to be a popular target zone.

Kenny, what did you happen to score?

I scored 22. I work night-shift, so always ride at night. I find it more dangerous during the day... So much more traffic on the road then. Also scored high on the MSF thing, I got my licences ages ago, before the days of riders courses. Would love to get out to a track safety course though.

:)
