Replacing the crankcase cover...question

Hey all:

I had a "mishap" a few weekends ago and dropped the bike while in a curve. My frame sliders prevented a lot of damage. Besides some scratches, minor damage to the fairing and a bruised ego and sore knee the only other damage was to the crankcase cover (on the gear shift side, mounted inside this cover is the stator.)

I ordered a new cover and gasket and they have arrived. My question is, do I need to drain the oil out in its entirety before removing this cover (I know there will be some residual oil in that area)? Or if the bike is left to sit for a few hours, will the oil settle to the bottom of the engine allowing me to avoid a full draining?

I just had the altenator cover replaced and did not have to drain the oil because it does drain into the drain pan.

I need to replace that cover too and I was also wondering about the oil...

You'll get a few drips because the flywheel is under that cover, but the oil level is below the bottom of it. I've got a brand spanking new one sitting on my desk that I'm too lazy to install.

Thanks for the tips...I installed the cover this weekend. While the damage to the original wasn't bad and I could've got away with just painting it, I went ahead and got a new cover. :thumbup:

Hi Goop,
I just received the cover and the gasket, anything else I need?

Did you have drain the oil? I think there are 3 bolts for the Startor Coil Assembly inside. Did you have to do anything special?
