This photo came in one of those "FAIL" type emails. I thought this picture clearly illustrates the importance of ATGATT... enjoy! Sorry for the crude language at the bottom, I wish I knew how to edit it out.

Darwin in action.

Re: Reason to gear up

I've seen this pic before. Whenever I think about not wearing my gear I look at the Ride2die.com website. It reminds me to take the few minutes to gear up before a ride no matter how short.

Re: Reason to gear up

If i remember I will search youtube, found some great videos of idiots stunting in shorts and t-shirts. On the one hand I cant help but cringe while watching them slide and roll on down the road, but Hellgate has it right. Where would we be without natural selection?

Re: Reason to gear up

That looks horribly painful.

If he had only had a Corna tank top, and the steel toed riding flip flops.

Re: Reason to gear up

Yeah, Corona!

I wonder if the look on his face is from his buddies laughing at him???

I will fess up that when I was young, 18, I thought I was a stud on my $325 Yamaha TX500 with Montgomery Ward ribbed tires. Hey I'm not making this sh*t up.

Me and my fraternal ridding brother Dennis (now owns a sweet Duc 900SS) were down at the local Yamaha shop watching "On Any Sunday" on a 19" TV in the part department. We were watch King Kenny Roberts decimate the F1 fields and left the shop PUMPED!!! I kicked my TX to life, kick, kick, kick...pant, pant...kick, kick, kick...B*TCH...kick, kick VAROOMMMM! and off we sped through the neighborhoods behind the shop. There was this beautiful left hand corner with no stop sign, Dennis zips through, he had Dunlop K81s on his TX. Then I zip...oops!!!...sh*t...slide...smash! crash! DOOM!!! I had low sided my bike and stuffed it under a Ford Fairlane that had, I kid you not, an I beam for a rear bumper. One of my mufflers stuck straight up and I was cut up, mainly on my left forearm, NO GEAR but my helmet and gloves. I rode home with blood running down my arm. I got home and my parents freaked out. Man were they mad! I scrubbed the wound the best I could and bandaged it up. It took about three months to heal and for the next 15 years fine sand/rocks came out of my skin with puss. Tasty. It is better now but every once in while some junk comes to the surface. Wear your gear and avoid the pain and suffering.

Thank you for that story, Hellgate. I've only been down once on the pavement and I was lucky. After seeing one of my coworkers get all scraped up after going down on the shoulder in shorts and a golf shirt, I bought a mesh jacket and started wearing one of my two jackets year-round. After reading all the encouraging posts here, I've made a concerted effort to wear my armored pants all the time. Grated they aren't that armored, but it will help.

Puss-encapsulated pebbles...makes me shiver.

^^^ Be sure to wear a boot or at minimum some kind of shoe that covers your ankle and will stay on is you do fall off. The foot on the guy in the photo really looks messed up. He just crashed and it is turning purple already.

Double ouch. I always gear completely up and shake my head at those I meet onthe road who aren't. Especially the ones without helmets...
