R6 Fork Swap Question

So I finally got around to getting some R6 forks and calipers (counting the days till the 10th when they arrive ).

My question is, why does everyone use spacers to put them on? I know the obvious answer is "so they fit", but couldn't the R6 triples just be used instead of the FZ ones? That way there wouldn't be weird handlebar risers with clipons either.

Assuming that it will bolt to the headstock of the FZ6 frame, this should be fine. You may still need spacers for the brake calipers so that they'll line up with the FZ6 brake disks. You won't know that until you try.

The spacers are needed when the R6 forks are used in the FZ6 tripleclamps.

IMHO, go for it. Let us know how it works out.

The following post is based upon memory.. take it at face value until I find the info...

I'm searching for a post on the other forum I know someone tried this I think and for some reason I want to say the FZ6 stem is a bit longer than the R6. They ended up pressing the stem out and pressing the r6 clamps onto the fz6 stem. I'll post the link if I can find it.

Well, I've looked all over the only thing I can find is a hypothetical solution is as I described. Pressing the R6 tripples onto the FZ6 stem. Can't find a post about someone actually going through with it. I found a couple posts of people who actually made custom triples to put Inverted R6 forks in. Way to much work and money invovled there. The biggest problem with the regular R6 upper triple is you'll have to get clipons, or fab up some way to attach the FZ6 handlebars. Good luck there.

P.S. Killernoodle is the guy that made the comment about pressing the triples on the stem so if you have any questions you'll want to maybe PM him on the other board.

I have no idea if it would work, and if it does its probably a simpler solution until you run into the handle bar problem. I am 99% sure the stock R6 clip ons are too low for the fairing, so that means you would need to buy Converti Bars, CB11XX Clip Ons or Helibars. Not bad options but something you would need to work out.

If you are going to go for a total frontend swap, use the '07 and up R6 frontend and get the cool forks and radial brakes. That would be very cool! :thumbup:

I've been thinking of a way to do this for a bit. I'm waiting on a yama dealer to let me know how the stems vary and how easy it would be to switch stems

I've got all the parts on the way so I'll give it a go. I am using CBR1100 clipons so I can keep the fairing for the time being, but I am planning on a swap in the future (not R6 though).

you can look at microfiche for part numbers and see what is the same and different. I'm pretty sure the upper bearing is different, as is the steering stem.

As for the spacers, you already have them on your front wheel anyways, they just need to be a slightly different legnth for the R6 fork. The brake spacers are the out of ordinary ones that I don't care for either, but they're small enough to not really worry about...

Not too sure about the top of the R6 triples, but I have seen guys press the stem from a Vmax into Busa triples and just drill the top plate for risers. Will have to look and see if the top plate for the R6 triples are solid or not. If it is I would think you could just center up the risers, being very careful precision wise, drill through holes for the bolts,and mount the handlebars that way. Then you won't need clip ons and you can maintain the upright seating position.

Would be willing to bet that she would love the handling with a USD front end vs the old style damping rod forks on it now. Have a line on a set of Showa forks and a Showa rear shock off of a friends track bike (he upgraded to full Ohlins), but that's a secret shhhhhhh.:thumbup:
