I just got done mounting the fender and thought I'd post up some pics from the install.

Huge thanks to RyanK for the drawings of the brackets...as you can see mine aren't as nice as the machined pieces. But I made these for about 8 bucks material and 4 hours of my time with a drill, grinder, tap, and some files. And they do the job nicely and don't look half bad if I do say so.

Anyway:

Time to go test ride and get the fork settings figured out!

Nice to see another FZ6 with the R6 fork mod in the Allentown area. :)

Good job on the brackets. The 2007+ up fender adapters are definitely different looking than the ones used on my 2004.

update:

Forks are set with 4 lines showing for preload, 5 clicks out for compression dampening, and 7 clicks out for rebound. I'm 245lbs with gear and it's riding very well. Just eats up the bumps and turns in very quick now. The front "nose dive" under hard braking is pretty much gone, I'm loving it. One of these days I need to properly setup the sag for the front and rear...

Also I've had a few people ask about the shims for the axle and calipers so here is the info to save some searches:

Axle shim 0.090" McMaster-Carr# 98126A797

Caliper shims 0.100" I used two washers for this: McMaster-Carr#'s 97022A543 (0.060") + 98089A392 (1mm ~0.040")

Glad you are liking it, the nose dive is the biggest reason I did the swap too. One thing I have noticed is that my new front brakes have a little more drag than they should. How are yours doing? I might have the incorrect shim size for the calipers, or maybe it is just time to pop the pistons out and give the calipers a good once-over.

I noticed what I thought was the same thing so i rechecked the position of the calipers and the gap from the rotor to the caliper is almost identical, inside and out. And since I didn't do the "spin" test with the stock setup I'll never know for sure, but I do know the stock setup had some drag as well, just maybe not as much. But I can only tell with the front wheel lifted off the ground. Pushing the bike around feels the same and I've had no issues riding it. So I think it's just something to get used to.

OP,
Minor thread jacking. . . . I'll start a new one if you like but, can I ask what year of fork you put on there and what else was needed to get them completely installed?

It sounds like the hub spacers are different width.
Calipers bolt up with no modifications.
Used the stock FZ triple clamp.
So everything else bolts up except the fender when you grab 1999 to 2004 R6 forks?

Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

You need '03-'04 R6 or '07+ R6S forks. You can use the stock triple on the FZ6. And then you need the axle, caliper, and fender shims the OP pictures in his first post.

So are you saying that in either case, you need the R6/R6S calipers? But it appears the 03/04 have the same caliper mount as the FZ while the later models switched to the radial mount with a bulk of the bracket integrated into the lower casting.

That is not to say the bolt spacing, depth, angle etc. is correct to bolt our caliper to the 03/04 R6 forks. It just follows the same style as our FZ.

Thanks!

Well I think the 07+ fz6 has the same 4 piston calipers as the R6 so thats why I didn't need the R6 calipers. Just don't get the cool looking blue or gold bolts.

Ya, my 08 has the 4 piston calipers but they have a different p/n than the R6S caliper.

Quick Q? Will an 05 R6 Fork work for this swap/bolt up with these same mods? The one for sale is not a radial mounted caliper or inverted. Does this mean its more than likely like a 2004?

The unofficial parts inter-change says NO. Anyone know for certain?

I'm not sure... My '06 part number in the microfiche is listed as 4TV-23102-10-00

The '05 is listed as 4TV-23102-02-00

not sure what the difference is, as they look the same.

Check out http://www.mrcycles.com/aboutus.asp for a microfiche if you really want to dig around to see what bits are different...

The '05 R6 fork is USD, not traditional. It also uses radial brakes.

But that's what I'm saying; its not UPD or radial - maybe not listed correctly or the year cut off put it on the edge???

It's probably not listed correctly. Attached is a photo of my '05 R6.

03 to 04 R6 and 06 to 09 R6S use the same fork. The 05 R6 has the different forks, brakes and fuel injection system from the other years.

Hope this helps.

Ya the PN's rolled to something else. Not sure what the change is, but w/out the part in hand, its not worth it.

I dug up the following PN's and applications. . .
