Question for a N. Californian (Job)

There is a job that I'm totally qualified for and I just wanted some opinions from some of you. The main concern is how comfortable could I be with this salary and how close could I live without spending a fortune for a house or commuting more than an hour. What do you think?

Best thing to do IMHO is to check on Google maps for cities near by and then check with Realtor.com to find out prices.
Also check here--
Stats about all US cities - real estate, relocation info, house prices, home value estimator, recent sales, cost of living, crime, race, income, photos, education, maps, weather, houses, schools, neighborhoods, and more
to find out the demographics, housing, weather, etc. on just about any city you can think of

I've spent a some time comparing schools with housing and it seems like you have to spend a fortune on a house to get your kids in a good school. Doing a cost of living comparison shows that it's over 50% more expensive and housing being the biggest factor at 114% more expensive. Although I think N. CA would be a nice place to live it wouldn't be worth it.

That is a hard call. I know real estate prices have dropped alot in CA but there you are still pretty close to SF so it may not have dropped that much.

One thing to consider to is the state income tax, 10% if I'm not mistaken. You get spoiled in TX with none. Property taxes are lower than TX however.

On the plus side you are close to some of the best roads in the world, good skiing and close to SF, very fun city.

The weather is great too. It will get hot out there, but cool compared to TX.

When I moved out here last fall, we were pleased to discover that Nurses (my wife) make almost twice as much in San Francsico as they do in Chicago....we actually benefited in that respect.

I just placed an offer on a house in SF yesterday :thumbup: Point it, I was in your boat a year ago and now I'm here....loving it.

Have you considered Oregon?

Geez, must be nice when one can turn down a job if offered due to the location. CA has around 11% unemployment---it's really desperate around here. Obviously, you're not desperate and have a decent hand. Nice! BTW, Martinez itself---some of this area smells like a refinery.

I'm just exploring possibilities. The wife would like to get out of the Houston area. I can't say that I blame her.

Life in N. CA. would be exceptional, with a lot of things to do as a family or on my own on the FZ.

I have three months left on my contract here at work so I can't go anywhere or they'll could make me pay them my moving expenses back, and they moved me from N.W. Colorado. I think it was about 12,000 dollars, they did everything.

I would really like to live out near my mom in Bandera, TX but there isn't any work.

So if you live in an area that isn't flat, hot and humid and you need a process control dude.... Or if you know someone that works at your local power plant, chemical plant, paper mill and the like here is my LinkedIn.
