After seeing the "almost crapped my pants thread" I searched and found now general pets thread... Post what you have or had.

Currently I own one snake..a corn snake. I used to have a ton of spiders, bunch of scorpions, a few centipedes, and a few snakes. Sold them all prior to joining the Navy, but had a friend watch this one snake I had because it is awesome (I think it's a she) and has never tried to bite anyone.

So here are some pics. You all ride bikes, so you should be tough enough to not freak out here. ;)

The snake I kept when I first bought it.

My other corn snake..this one had a bad attitude and would bite me just about every time I'd take it out of the tank. It would calm down after having it out of the tank, but the initial process was always interesting. It would rattle it's tail to mimic a rattlesnake and bite. It's mouth was small, so the bites didn't hurt at all.

Didn't own this snake, but wound up hanging onto him for a while because the owner moved to Brazil for a bit. Rusty is his name and I had him for the better part of a year. Another corn.

If this one bit me, I probably would've had my roommate drive me to the ER.

Cool snakes X.

I grew up with snakes around, although here 9 out of 10 are deadly

I think Aus has something like 8 of the top 10 deadliest in the world

awesome pics, cheers mate.

Hah yea, you guys have some of the most deadly of everything! Spiders, snakes, jellyfish, sharks, not sure about scorpions, and also some other inverts. I'd love to get over there at some point though.

The pride and joy of my old collection...spiders! I love these things. Am pretty bummed about not having any. May buy one or two so it isn't as much of a burden for someone to care for while I'm deployed. Still not sure though because as of right now, I may have to sell my snake because of not being able to find someone to keep it for me.

Female Aphonopelma seemani
IMG_0459s.jpg

Unsexed Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens. A relatively young one..their colors change a lot as they grow.
IMG_0570s.jpg

Female Grammostola rosea. This is the most commonly kept species by far. Mainly due to availability and their general tolerant disposition. Each spider of any species has it's own personality. You could have a spider from the species that is considered most docile that is a maniac..and on the other hand, you could have one that is considered maniacal that is a little teddy bear.
IMG_0294s.jpg

Male Poecilotheria ornata.
IMG_2311s.jpg

The big thing with spiders is that males don't live as long as females..making females more valuable. With tarantulas..a female can live over 20 years once mature. A male on the other hand will have about 2 years after maturing...some have made it to 3 years, but it's pretty rare.

Unsexed Psalmopoeus pulcher molting. Molting is how they grow. They are invertebrates, so they have an exoskeleton vs. an internal skeleton. To grow, a new exoskeleton builds up underneath their current one. Eventually they need to push out of their old one and let their new one expand. It is very soft and vulnerable during this period.

Molting pic of Xenesthis sp. "white" This spider doesn't have a species name yet, that I know of, so is fairly rare..and expensive! This pic gives you a good idea of how the new exoskeleton forms inside the old one.

lotsa a creepy stuff there. cool pictures.

I dont understand the draw to having reptiles, spiders and insects as pets...

cool to watch perhaps, but how can a connection be made with them like a person can make with a dog or a cat?

There isn't as much of a connection as with a dog or cat, but I still really enjoyed having them. It's basically just like having an aquarium with fish, only I could take a bunch of them out and handle them.

The rugrat that ate up the lino in the kitchen...

Probably would have been better off with a fish. :disapprove:

Haha that little bugger...hard to stay mad at a face like that huh? :D

I didn't mind the snakes but I had to skip pics of all the rest...creepy!

Here are pics of my two westies that we love as true family members. The first is of Tenshons when she was a puppy (April 2003), the second is of Jaffa when he was a puppy (April 2008), and the last is this past Spring.

Something cuddly and cute for comparison!

I gave it a quick search but only found one thread with the word pet in the title and it was a specific subject, so I figured I'd start up a general thread.

I miss my little friends. :(
