Parking your bike

I know there was a thread about this some time ago, but we have more and new members.

I'd guess this is about how safe you feel your bike is when you park it. I park mine in full sight, as close as possible to where I will be and where as many people as possible can see it or hear the alarm if anyone should hit it or attempt to steal it.

I park in normal spots, if someone knocks me over or hits it then that is why i have insurance. My bike is a vehicle and deserves to be treated just like any other vehicle. I personally think that parking in fire lanes or on the sidewalk ranks up there with the guy in a corvette that parks diagonally across a few spots "So nobody door dings him" No need for it.

I park the closest I can to where I'm going - I want to be able to see that fratboy douche walk up and sit on it so I can run outside and own his face :spank: I never got why people park on the sidewalk - all it takes is one trashy lady to walk by with a rhinestone/chrome/metal clad purse swinging around to scratch your paint job... I think people get more pissed when they see a bike taking up a whole normal spot in a packed parking lot than one parked in the hash marks so I usually park on those as long as its not a fire lane.

I find this too, i actually had someone say something to me one, and i explained to him that if i drove my car i would take up a whole spot, so why should i not be able to park my bike in the same manner.

Depends on the situation. Usually as close as possible, can be any one of those choices.

Not flaming, no need. But... I never park my car diagonal, just far away from others. A lot of people have huge SUV's now, and lots of kids who swing those heavy a$$ doors wide open when they charge out. I've gotten so many bad dings.. Now I park far away. Even still get the occasional jackoff who parks right next to me when there are no other cars around..:Flip:

Don't even get me started on SUV's....sorry, but you don't need a Navigator for your 2 kids...its not a 16 wheeler so you don't need 2 lanes to make a turn and the lines in the parking lots aren't a target to put your wheels on.../rant

I love driving a POS car - when I get dinged I can just ding them back...worse.

LOL, I do that. I saw a red corvette parked WAY far away in a parking lot, with no other cars anywhere near him, so I parked my beater cavalier next to him :thumbup:

I voted in the hash marks, but it always depends. I will park up on the sidewalk (or concrete front area) if it is easily accessable and I know the business won't mind. If the hashmarked area is too small to where I can't be far away enough from the handicapped spot, then I find a normal spot, and park on the side so another bike can also fit in that spot.

I found it really annoying when there was a bike in a normal spot, but parked in a way to where he took up the whole spot and I couldn't fit my bike in there also.

Yup, I remember because I created the poll. I haven't changed the way I parked, I will try to avoid parking in parking lots that are meant for cars. Heard of too many members having their bikes knocked down while parked in the parking lot, usually without a note, which pretty much is left as a hit n run.

Back in the days when I use to drive and own a vehicle, I have to admit that I would get frustrated myself whenever I saw a bike in a parking spot. Especially when I see a great spot and I start pulling in that all of a sudden I notice there's a bike areadly parked. So I can certainly see where the frustration can come by your co-workers. On that note, I will only park in a parking space as a last resort. Because unlike myself, I know that there are a lot of drivers who do get upset and might purposely, or accidently hit my bike. As far as I'm concerened, if a business doesn't have designated motorcycle parking, they have left that decision up to the motorcyclist to park wherever they want. So if it's right next to their front door, or sidewalk, so be it.

I'd love to park in the grass right outside the commander's window, but there may be repercussions.

I'll park in the striped spots if there's not bike spots left, but most others won't because the base police are just itching to write pointless tickets. They once wrote an entire group of us tickets for not having reflective belts when all our jackets have reflective piping. Our first sergeant threw the tickets out, but it delayed our trip by a full hour nonetheless.

I voted sidewalk, but it depends. If its somewhere like work, where the sidewalk includes a little nook right in front of the windows, I'll park there, but if the sidewalk is one of those skinny deals where people will be walking within a couple feet of it I'll park it elsewhere. Luckily a lot of places around here have motorcycle parking and they are rarely filled.

If I have to park in a car spot I'll park off to one side so another bike can park next to me.

They have one employee in a car taking one space. They think one employee on a bike shouldn't take a space. They are stupid.

There here to find out where other bikers park. If you go somewhere and you don't see a spot thats not close enough (where would other bikers park there bike) and you are worried that something will happen to your bike. "I" and I say I because I want to know where is the safest spot, and hope that if someone saw or seen something happen they would be able to help me or any of us out. So it's just getting to know where it would be safe.

As far as the "Insurance question", I have insurance but i don't want anything to happen to the bike, granted having or not having insurance, I don't want anything to happen to my bike. Besides there are deductibles and some mod's won't be covered and I take pride in my bike.

Believe it or not, I associate this parking issue with lane splitting: it requires one to be assertive and, at the same time, be tactful and use discretion. I often park just as if I was on a bicycle, sometimes on a sidewalk keeping in mind that I don't want to impede foot traffic nor shopping cart access. Unfortunately, many (most?) places don't have bike racks and, strangely, some that do place them in far and obscure areas where vandalism or theft can happen unnnoticed. Similarily, motorcyclists and their needs often seem to be neglected by parking lot planners. Of course, sometimes there's no choice but to take a cager space in which case I try to pick a "safe-looking" one. Parking even near a handicap parking space horrifies (exaggeration) me! Not only is it a gigantic fine if you're ticketed for parking in the load area (or just even on the painted line) there's a risk of wheelchair or somebody assisting bumping (or even worse?) your bike. Now, about being annoyed or irritated by some parkers...you know what annoys me? Answer: the frickin' lazy A-holes who abandon shopping carts wherever. Often, I have to get out of my van to move them lest I bump one and it dents another cager/bike or rolls down a hill or something. Many, if not most, lots have a return area for carts but many people are f'ing inconsiderate, lazy slobs because, ohhhh, waahhhh, it's too long of a walk to push the cart back to a return area. Waaah?
