Oil for high mileage bikes

I've been looking around at the oil threads with the search function, but I haven't found much about what you all use for higher mileage bikes. My 06 has 41K miles on it, and I don't know if that means I should be using a heavier oil or something. Looks like synthetic 5W40 and 10W40 are pretty popular. Also, I will be running down to Texas in August, so it will be hotter than the devil's b*llsack.

Can't really see why you should use any special oil for a high mileage bike?
Perhaps use some of that engine-clean stuff... haven't used it for either my bike or any cars before... maybe it's good?

Well not so much a special oil, but maybe something a bit more viscus because of the larger tolerances.

I would think you should just be using the normal oil grade until either the rings give out or you buy something else.

41k is not really high milage just use what you've been using.

Yeah the bike is actually just getting broke in good so just use what ever you want, I personally use royal purple max cycle, really good stuff!!!

Yeah, the generalization is to use an oil with a heavier warm weight, (second number) usually 10w40 for cars, but engines, especially motorcycle engines, are made to such tight tolerances nowadays I think it would have to be very high mileage before that advice makes sense for an FZ6.

I just put 41K on my 06 this last weekend, I keep on using 10-40 Amsoil, shifts great and runs cool.

Yeah I was mostly curious about what weight people were running. 10W40 sounds like it will be the best way to do. I just bought the bike from my cousin, which is why I don't know oil has been used. Neither did he, because all his maintenance was done by the Yamaha dealer.

Good for cars that have been been neglected (oil not changed regularly) but VERY BAD for motorcycles. Can damage wet clutches. I would advise norcalwelder to use the same oil he's been using, it's gotten him this far. If he wanted to go thicker for hotter weather on trip, 20W-50 M/C oil should be perfectly fine.

+1 on that but he just got he bike and does not know what oil was previously run in it that's what brought his question about

Oops! I just went back & read all of the posts & realized you're right! I guess at 40k miles I'll still be using my Rotella 5W-40 if it still seems to be running well & quiet. Maybe he can call the dealer & ask what kind of oil has been used in it & stick with that?
