No 'Juice' To The Headlight

Have a slight problem. My headlight(s) decided to go out. I checked the obvious--the bulbs, fuse, and wiring harness. The fuse was blown when I checked it. I replaced it and turned the key to on. Still nothing. I pulled the connection off of the bulb and tested it with a multi tester, no juice. I pulled the harness apart down by the tank and tested each prong for juice. The horn, signals, and hazards are still functioning but there is no power going to the headlight wire(s). I searched the forum but didnt find anything. Man, I really dont want to bring it in to the shop! Anyone had similar problems?
 
Are we talking about an FZ6, or a KLR 650? If an FZ6, I'd ask if you started the engine after replacing the fuse. The headlights only work if the engine is running on the FZ6. If you started the engine and still had no lights, then the next component back in the circuit would be the headlight relay.

If you are talking about a KLR 650, I have no information.
 
If it was running did the fuse just blow again?

If so short to ground or a bad relay.
 
I am having a similar problem right now on my SV.

After bike night on Tuesday (on our way to dinner, so very dark out), got about 50 feet out of the parking lot and lights went out. Had my way lit by other riders, then Rob checked it out, fuses were fine, bulbs were fine, wires all seemed to be in tact. Miraculously fixed itself and hasn't reoccured...

If you find anything out, let us know so we can check it on mine. Good luck
 
After doing what has already been suggested, if you still don't have a headlight, recheck the fuse to see if it blew again?

Then think if you did any type of maintenace where you may have pinched a wire causing a shorted ground that is blowing your fuse.

Look at the schematic in your manual to see any common components in the circuit. If you have a multimeter you could test for a short by going from the hot lead at the lightbulb to the ground lead with the switch off and see if you have continuity? If you do you have a short circuit.
 
I feel a bit "dumb" I must say. I was rigorously testing with the multimeter with just the ignition on and NOT the engine running. I will have to test the circuit all over again the right way this time!! Thanks for the input and I will keep you posted.

Don't feel bad dude, I did the exact same thing when I was hooking up my demon fairing. The blinkers worked, so I assumed the headlight would too. Once I started it the engine itself it was like, "Hey there's the light. I'm an idiot." Good luck. :thumbup:
 
UPDATE: Finally got the chance to work on the bike. Started the bike this time to check things out. Headlight(s) fired right up. Lesson learned!
 
First start the bike. Then check the circut. If no power, check the switch, it is the most likely place for a short. After that, check the wiring. My bet is on the the switch. It gets the most abuse, GRUMPY
