I have spent the last several weeks visiting dealers from all over my area, reading specs and stats, and reading reviews and I have come to the conclusion that the FZ6 would serve me best. I like the sporty look with a comfortable seating position. It is just about ideal for the city commuting between my apartment and campus. Also I am graduating and entering my PhD and so I would love to have a bike I can travel a state or two over to visit friends from undergrad. I am looking at the 2008 FZ6 and I have asked a few dealers to look for a new 2007 FZ6 to see if I could save a few dollars a get a year older. From what I can tell from my research there are not many significant changes between the 07 and 08. Every dealer I have seen has presented me with the MSRP that Yamaha advertises at 7k. So here are my questions:

I am looking to pay 4-5k cash and finance the rest but 7k seems a little steep once you tack on taxes and charges. How much haggling can you really do with a dealer on a new bike? Is it like purchasing a car or is it really just what you see on the tag?

Any advice on insurance companies that offer particularly good coverage? Also I have gotten a few quotes, do you guys usually get collision or comprehesive? Several people have said they don't bother with either but I am just not sure.

Sorry for being so clueless in these regards but all I have ever ridden is dirt and I really want to get into street but I want to make smart decisions to begin with, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site.
Here is a nice thread that will help you.

You can get it for around 7k out the door. I know others have done better on price than I did, but I dont think I did bad. 6k before tax tittle lic and a three year unlimited mile warrenty. Did I need it? I dont know yet. 14600 miles in with just a few days over a year on the bike with no mechanical problems. I thought I had one, but it just needed plugs.

Anyway this will give you a good bargining idea.

Good idea to try to find a 07, red of course! I paid 7 out the door in Ca you should be able to do better than in your neck of the woods. Try cycletrader.com, lots of dealers advertise there. I didn't buy the YES but you can buy one up to a year after your purchase of a new bike from any dealer. It is a real solid bike with few problems.

good luck with your search, a lot of folks up in my area are getting them for about 6500 OTD.

and also the 07-08 models only vary in color, nothing else.

Hello Rob

Everything is negotiable. Just remember that there is more than one yamaha dealer in your area. If one is not willing to budge, leave and head to the next one. With the way the economy is going right now, I would think dealers would be incented to push inventory out the door to avoid interest payments.

With insurance, I have found that Progressive is competitive in the states. If you are going to finance any part of the purchase, the lein holder requires full coverage to protect their asset. Hope this helps.

Here is proof you can deal on a 2008 FZ6. This is my invoice with personal info erased. I went through 7 dealers in 5 states (150 mile radius) to get this price. $6203 before freight and admin... $6418.00 OTD  Good luck!

Definitely haggle with them! I got mine for $6600 including all fees OTD last week. If you have some time, go to a bunch of dealers and show them that you are serious.

... or ...

Consider trolling for a low mileage used '07. I found one last Sept. for $5200 OTD (1200 miles and not a scratch on her). Could be your best option if you have a little bit of time before you need it. Troll eBay, Craigslist and CycleTrader for good deals. Those same sources will probably turn up a good price on a new '07.

Used is definitely going to be your best price.

I got tired of all of the flakiness on Craigslist and the other used bike sites, so I went ahead and got mine from a dealer. I haggled and got a new '07 in the color I wanted for $6700 OTD - not the most smoking of deals, but not bad, IMO.
