Motorcycle Cop

Has any member received a ticket from a cop on a motorcycle? Here in Vegas, the motor patrol officers are in abundance in this town and I have had numerous encounters with them, but no ticket. Just the other day, there was a cop with a radar gun and he didn't even point the radar at me, and I was moving! Truthfully, I thought I was busted. As I was riding by him, I saw him pick up the radar gun and point it towards the vehicles behind me which I left behind. Strange. Not complaining though, just confused.

I've been pulled over on my enduro numerous times... It grabs cops attention because they think i'm on the road with an illegal dirt bike when its totally legal. One cop pulled me over and told me knobby tires were illegal.. I pointed out that they were D.O.T approved and he had know idea what I was talking about...

I did get busted once and eat it up big time, when young and stupid!!! Got caught riding out a wheelie.. got a ticket for reckless driving.. was total controlled but the cop was an a** hole.. I wound up getting my licensed suspended for three months. So learn from my MISTAKE!!!!

Only time i have ever been pulled over on the bike was by a bike cop, he was a complete ass and said i was going 15 over what i actually was, i fought the ticket and he swore up and down in court that i was lieing and was going as fast as he said, i got the ticket reduces by 1mph which actualy dropped it $100 from the original ticket, still sucked that he lied though.

There are only a few motorcycle police where i live but it seems to be along the lines of "do you wave to other riders" theme. If he would wave to you on a fz (even if he a "cruiser" guy) then he will respect that sometimes you need to speed to keep away from the cagers. If he wouldn't wave, he'd give you a ticket because your bike is faster!

Interestingly we are having road works done on our road and the speed notification displays to get you to slow down do not register the bike at all, perhaps their radar guns work on the same principle.

the older radar guns were probably affected by size of the object more. they tended to pick up the largest object in their view.
now with the advent of radar and other new technologies, I think that time has passed.

yup, when the officer was in court he said he was using a LIDAR gun which is a new laser type and all it needs is a 2 inch by 4 inch target at 1000 meters and works similar to a hunting rifle with a scope and they can target anything in a group that they want to. they say it is also accurate to +or- 1MpH

Even LIDAR accuracy is still dependent on angle of incendence....but that just means that it always measures slower than actual, which doesn't help the "radar was wrong" defense much.

So, the next dilemma is...

When you see someone beside the road pointing a hunting rifle type thing at you, do you slow down becuase it is a cop, or do you speed up so the mad and deranged psycho with a hunting rifle can't shoot you..

My next door neighbor is an Ogden motorcycle cop (he's driving his car these last couple months) and he's a wealth of knowledge and advice, bought a Yamaha cruiser just two weeks before I got my FZ6.
It's nice having a cop car parked next to your home, too, when you're gone so often! :thumbup:

My next door neighbor is an Ogden motorcycle cop (he's driving his car these last couple months) and he's a wealth of knowledge and advice, bought a Yamaha cruiser just two weeks before I got my FZ6.
It's nice having a cop car parked next to your home, too, when you're gone so often! :thumbup:

Ask him if he is influenced on stopping the bike for speeding depends on appearance. Meaning that a rider in full protective gear would influence his decision not to stop him vs a rider with just a helmet. Also giving that the rider is just riding fast, not recklessly.

Hmm... I was not aware that doing "wheelies" was illegal? Got to check the California DMV laws...

As he often rides off-duty with his wife, neither in any safety gear at all, I don't think I'll ask him that...

Vegasrider, when I cite people, it's not usually based upon things such as gear. I don't normally cite bikes, unless they do something extremely stupid (read: SQUID). But that being said you should be wearing your gear! Last year, I went to too many fatal bike crashes....

Yes, I was assuming that the bike was just speeding, not riding recklessly. I tend to go a bit fast at times for the sole purpose of getting separation from traffic. This leaves me vulnerable for tickets, just like the other day....I was coming off a left turn on a red light behind a few vehicles and when I had the opportunity, I passed them up and at the worse time, there was that cop with his radar gun, hidden behind some sidestreet, but fortuanately, he didn't bother pointing it at me. He clearly saw me going pretty fast, but I guess he was a nice patrolmen and concentrated on the cagers. When I visited my parents in Portland for Christmas, It was wet and cold, but I noticed a motorcycle cop ahead of us on the freeway. I thought it was a state trooper, but it was the Portland Police. Looked like he was on a BMW. Anyway, the point is, I get excited seeing other bikes, including motorcycle cops. Kudo's for that copper riding in that weather.

thats good riding weather in Oregon... As long as we don't have the freezing rain. Today I rode to work and it was raining with 18 mph winds. It was worth it to get out of the truck for an hour or so.
