hey everyone, new to the forum here. i was just curious if it were all possible to switch out the engine on our bikes to say an fz1 engine or maybe even an r6. if you got the engine, ecu, harness, air box off the donor bike

I would say anything is possible if you've got enough time, money and patience to throw at it. :BLAA: I haven't heard of any engine swaps though.

R6 yes r1 it would be much harder because the width of the frame compared to the motor, but a r6 engine would drop right in and bolt up. Dont know if you know or not but our engine is the same thing as a 03 r6 with the exception of cams ecu and a few other odds and ins

Possible? Yes.

Bolt on swap? Probably not.

A liter engine would probably require stretching the frame too. The R6 engine would probably come closer to fitting. But both would require modification to the frame and/or engine block.

The unoffical FZ6 compatibility chart would have the best info on it.

If you really want R6 performance, i'd say to just get an R6. It's a hundred pounds lighter or so with a peppier engine. And if you really want the handlebars, there are mounts for them that clip onto the forks like the clip-ons. Or buy some convertibars for the R6.

sorry chevyfazer but I would double check on that bolt in r6 engine advice. I believe that the mounting points are different.

I tried added this in but most of the time i use a voice typing app on my phone and if i hit backspace it delets the whole sentence but yes the mounting points are different but with the way it is designed only a few brackets would be needed to bolt it to the frame but a lot more would be need to get it running but after looking at a complete parts list with part #s from yamaha for our engine vs a 03 r6 the only differences I see are in the head, they have the same pistons, same crank so I dont see why you couldnt just slap a 03 r6 head on one (with the proper tuning) and make pretty close to the same power

Hmmm, intriguing. SUB'd

The problem with using any engine that doesn't bolt in directly is this: The stock engine is actually a structural part of the frame, adding to the rigidity of the frame. By changing the motor and using brackets or what have you to get the engine to fit, you change the stresses on the frame, potentially causing some major problems.

Yes if you get billy bob with a stick of pig putty or jb weld to put it together but im a metallurgicalist/fabricator and come from a long line of machinest so if I were to do it it would be just as strong as yamahas original design or better but there are many billy bobs out there who like trying to make chicken salad out of chicken sh!t so it all comes down to how far you are willing to go...I would love to be able to do it but it just dosent seem like I would be happy in the end for all that work for a 20hp gain...but then again ive always been "that guy" who dose something just because someone says it cant be done

That's all well and good, but there's more to it than just fabrication skills. You need to analyze the stresses that's being imparted into the frame and the motor and make sure that everything is happy. There are engineers in this world for a reason.

Your %100 right but we are not talking about a 454 big block the way the engine is turned and the angle its mounted at it could honestly be held in place with duct tape. There is more stress on a boat transome with a 45hp motor attached and most of those are made of 3/4 plywood...point being mounting the motor is the easy part if you have the right know how, tools, and will. the hard part would be making it all work in harmony

thanks for the input. i really like my bike, but just wish it had some more power. swapping the heads/cams from an r6 seems to be the easiest but i dont really think its worth the trouble

Doable. Yes, especially if you have a friend that's a machinist.

However if most states are anything like NY, once you touch the frame your insurance, registration and title are null and void because it's No longer a FZ6 in their book. I think they list it as a custom, and you have to get it checked out by the state, get it's own VIN number and find an insurance company to cover you (Expen$ive). IMO if it doesn't bolt right in you'd be better off just buying an FZ1, it will probably be cheaper.

Ive never herd anything like that about insurance or what not, if someone was to do something like that couldnt they just not let them know or how dose it work up there?

Ya it would be a lot of hassle for not that much gain imo about swaping engines but the cams on the other hand...from people ive talked to as well as a good friend of mine who works at a performance motorcycle shop and things ive read on the forum, you could swap cams with relative ease and no other major mods needed other than a pcIII or a ecm reflash

Oh i'm sure that's how most people who do stuff like that do-say nothing. Only problem with that is that if you get pulled over by the wrong person, your bike gets impounded and fined out the hole. A buddy put a kx 500 engine in a modded KLR650 frame and got busted... got fined like 2000 bucks.

The other issue you'll find is that alot of shops won't work on your bike for "liabilty" reasons.

$2000 fine...wow thats something to think of...thanlfully I live in ga where laws like that dont exsist or if they do they are not enforced

If your not trying to build a full custom Monster, just buy another Bike with more power,no sense in ruining a perfectly good Fazer... :BLAA:

how much of a gain do you get from r6 cams?

Ive never sceen a dyno chart of one done but if you had all the other typical mods and got it tuned and reflashed for the cam I would imagine you could get a good 6-10 hp to the wheel
