Is this after you remove the bottom sheet metal??:confused:
A little more info would help.
Also, anybody do this & what are the results in noise level & performance?

Sorry guys and girls, yes it is just a diagram of the internals of a stock muffler, just to show you no ceramic no wadding, if you want to see the inside go to sbn put in search for fz6 muffler and one of them has one cut open, sorry dont know how to do links.:Sport:

I understand that it is the stock muffler, but what will cutting it up accomplish? I will search over there...
 
Having a friend who works at a muffler shop and was willing to do this for free... I went for it :)

Here is my report:

Removal of the muffler is very simple, it took about 10 minutes, no manual needed.

Cutting out the sheet metal took another 15. Someone has mentioned using a dremel tool to cut it with. It must have been one heck of a dremel and one tough wheel! This stuff is tough and thick! We've chewed through 5 heavy duty 4" wide discs on pneumatic cut-off tool. I don't know, maybe we've had a bad batch of discs but this stuff was definitely not easy to cut through. There is also one weld in the middle that will need to be cut away.

Cutting out the inside parts was piece of cake!

The sound:
Maybe it's just me... but i absolutely hear no difference, I know there must be a difference, but If i knew this was going to be the outcome I would have gutted everything out. It is as quiet as it was, however now it makes this very annoying buzzing noise at certain RPM's.

Anywhoo.. this is my experience with this mod. In my opinion it wasn't worth the time.

Doubt that you had a bad batch of cutting wheels, that's just a lot of metal to grind thru. A cutting torch maybe... ;)
 
im doing a different version of this mod so i can keep the stock look and protect my saddlebags

i used a plasma cutter so opening up the can was easy. i might just straight pipe the inside and pack it with some stainless steel wool to battle resonance or use perforated exhaust tubing to join the inlet to the two outlets.

ill post it when im done.
 
Me thinks the portion that was cut out was the resonence (sp?) area of the muffler, hence the drone at certain rpm. To get it louder the exhaust holes need to be larger, think db killer in vs. db killer out.

HavBlue was working on plans for a simple glass pack muffler. Any news Charlie?
 
I must add, I am pleased with the build quality of this muffler. It already has fiberglass packing as well as perforated sheet metal built into the skin.

I do agree with Hellgate, the relatively small openings is what makes the muffler sound the way it does. The replacement of these pieces however will not be easy :(

I think I'm ready to have a second run at it, this time, I"m taking the camera :)

Wolfman has just had it done, the out lets cut off and made bigger, and the first baffle perforated alot. Sounds good but talking either side of the bike with it idling we ahd to raise or voices dramatically, and after 150km's he said he couldnt hear anything, which isnt good being a dj (hey what song did you want, )

Yeah, but it sounds hot! and it was cheap, and thanks to Jules, there's a vid of it on youtube if you want to hear it.

I should wear earplugs, but being an old Ducati Man, i love the sound of a bike's exhaust when your riding on the pipe.

Ah...

Ah, my infamous "anyone modify a stock muffler" thread from SBN lives on over here now. :)

For the record, my intention on starting that thread was to modify my stock muffler, but after hearing another FZ6 owner who did the "long drill" mod, I decided I would either have to hack open the muffler (like you guys are talking about) or go aftermarket. Then, I came across a used Laser Quad and have never looked back. :)
