A switch is a good idea as well, but if you are sure to shut off the main breaker in the panel then you should have no issues with back feeding to the street.

So, being an APC guy.... what discounts can you get?

I was looking at a 7000 watt today with a field kit that will allow 8 breakers switched. You can set it for auto or manual switch. The generator runs on NatGas so I'd never have to fill it. I'd cut the breakers over for the furnace, hotwater, fridge, freezer and MBR for cable, TV and lights. The circut with the freezer also has the cable modem and wifi router so I'd be able to almost live in the MBR... :thumbup: It was $1,800 plus the field kit for $159.

I'll have to do the math on all those items to see just how many watts I really need.

The 7000 watt should be plenty sufficient, is that the running rating or the surge rating though?

Unfortunately the smallest generator that APC deals in at the moment is about a $65,000.00 (60,000 watts) Diesel Genset, so no matter what my discount i doubt that it would be worth it...unless you and the rest of your neighborhood wanted to go in and have it work for all of you at once.

Ours came with the wheel kit, but we strapped ours down to rubber matts on the back of our RV. (You would have to see it) So we took the wheels off.

One peice of advise, with the off brands that offer higher outputs, they will be LOUD!

Before we got the Kawi, and i cant remember the output now, we had a Generac (spelling). Holy cow was that thing loud. Not only from the exhaust but from the generator itself.

Just givin you a head ups on that one.

I am on day 6 without power, but luckly I was reasonabily prepared for it. I have had my generator for 8 years now. In the first 7.95 years I put less than 10 hours on it. In the last 6 days that has risen to almost 100 hours.

For those rushing out to get a generator, I would highly reccomend the use of a transfer switch. It allows you the convienece of being selective of what you have turned on and to control the sequence of starting so that you minimize surges. Not to mention the whole aspect of not pushing power outside your home. As far as installation goes, if you can do a dual headlight mod cleanly, you can install a transfer switch.

Until the power comes back I will hangout in the basement with my wood stove and FZ6 dreaming of warmer weather.

That's crazy. My sis lives in Billerica (no she isn't an inmate) and is also without power. She said she woke up to these scary noises that turned out to be trees ripping apart. Best wishes, stay warm and dry.

Thanks for the heads up, i know that they will be loud, but my house is very well insulated and i would only run it during the day, and i will most likely upgrade when $ is a bit more plentiful. as of right now i just want something so that i can live at home if this happens again.

It is 62 dba which is about the sound of a car idling in the driveway. This comes with an 8 circuit panel and then I'd have to buy the field kit for automatic transfer (10 sec delay). It does have the 7 day exerciser built-in too.
