Most of us in the US have seen the Air Force get some egg on their face wrt our Nuclear mission (accidental shipments to Taiwan, flying live Nucs across the country, etc.) and there's been a lot of firings/reorgs/etc in the last few months.
Currently, and for the last nine years, I've been working on the explosive components of egress systems (ejection seats, etc) but because of my nuclear weapon safety background, and five years working on the Minuteman missile system, I was offered a new job yesterday, which I've accepted!
I will be the top dawg (actual title is yet to be determined: Chief, Lead, Director, I/they don't know yet) for Engineering for the 309th Missile Maintenance Group, an organization of 500+ people.
I'll be reporting directly to a full Colonel, who just happens to be my boss now, he also was pulled into this organization last week. He's a stern taskmaster but one of the greatest human beings you could meet, I'm anxious and honored to be working for him again.
We had his Going-Away luncheon for him today (from my old group) and I thanked him for hiring me (into his new group) and we chatted for a bit. The new group has some problems (they were hammered the last inspection and a few folks fired) so the Col. said I could look forward to some 60- to 80-hour weeks, for about three months (his estimate) until we get things back in order. I've done this kind of workload before, but not while learning a new job/leading 49 people at the same time!
I start in a week, so you may not hear from me much after that (riding season pretty much slows after that anyway). Wish me luck!
