So basically the realistic procedure is to just clean and buff them shiny. Anything else won't last.

However, if you are getting ready to sell the MC, you can always do this before the person comes to take a look. It would really help the cosmetic appearance.

I've done about 500 miles since doing mine and there is a hue change but it certainly has not jumped back to the state it was. Looks good still.
