I'm curious if any of you have had the oppurtunity to ride an FZ1? If so, could you compare the two motorcycles as to the difference in the experience. Thanks, Matt

I did. I have driven the 2007 FZ1 before buying the FZ6 of that same year. I thought it was way too much for my experience.

Last week I've driven the 2008 Fz1 GT with full fearing. The 6 you need to keep high in RPM. The FZ1 feels heavier when driving. You feel the difference when throwing your bike around a corner. This is way more fun on the FZ6.

I am thinking of buying a new bike and for me it's going to be a new FZ6.

I've ridden my brother-in-law's FZ1 before. I have a FZ6 myself, only had it for 3 months and it's my first bike.

The FZ1 really felt "too much" for me. The handling and riding position are very similar to the FZ6, so that's great, but it has A LOT of power at any rpm. If you're cruising along in 2nd or 3rd gear, and decide to gun it, wow, it goes like a monster. Better hang on to the handle bars.

I feel like the FZ6 is the perfect bike for me (now), for all the reasons everybody here knows, but the FZ1 will be the first one I'll be looking at when it's time to upgrade. It's a beast. With the FZ6, I feel like I'm in control, but with the FZ1, it's like I need to make sure not to piss it off, or it'll punish me and skyrocket me to the moon... Not for beginners this bike!

I've ridden a 2003 R1, think it's the same motor de-tuned. Instantly fell in love with the torque in low rpm...totaly different feeling. What I noticed is that you can't really feel the speed as you do with the fz6, everything is so smooth at any speed...

I rode a FZ1 last fall, and really liked it. The motor is much smoother than the fz6, that alone almost made me purchase the fz1. The suspension is awesome on the fz1, everything is adjustable. The only thing I did not like on the fz1 was the fuel consumption. I talked to two different fz1 owners and both said they only get 30 mpg. One guy said he misses his old carburated fz1. So I bought the fz6 and have not regretted it one bit.

Yeah, I had kinda/sorta thought that one day I might move up to an FZ1. However, after hearing the LOUSY fuel mileage my ambitions are way tempered. Who enjoys pulling into a gas station so often? I really like the range that the FZ6 gives (around 250 miles). Only 30 MPH on the FZ1? Geez. Many cars get better mileage. I dunno, maybe still one day I'll move up. That butt ugly exhaust on the FZ1----I hope Yamaha dumps it on future model years.

I rode fz1-n with ABS this April, and it could be my my new bike, if it wasn't so expensive for me. It was very smooth and powerful at the same time. The ABS breaks are super. The sound, even on stock exhaust is great. The only thing I didn't like was seat.
But my 2004 fz6 was a half of the price of the new fz1, so I stay with 600cc.

My brother-in-law put an Akrapovic on his FZ1, and if you ask me, it looks pretty  and it sounds brutal!!

I always sit on one when I visit the dealership it just gives me kicks everytime. I love the riding position the most and the look from the top. It somehow feels smaller and compact than the FZ6 to me.

That is one sharp looking bike. The only part of the FZ1 I don't care for is the exhaust. The Akro solves that issue.

Oh the tail is great, you can tack into the wind, helps save fuel!

FZ1 Versus FZ6

Saturday I sold my FZ6 after putting about 1,500 miles on it. It was always an interim project bike for me, but I really liked that bike. It was energetic, comfortable and forgiving.

I bought a 2008 FZ1 Saturday and have about 80 miles on it. I’ve been obeying the break-in procedure, so I really have not gotten on it.

Getting to this point I test rode a 2008 Ducati S2R. So I can contrast that a little also.

Ergonomics/Feel

The FZ1 is definitely taller, I’m 5’-10” and now I’m on my toes (not uncomfortably so though). It pulls you more forward, and as the tank is wider, I feel a little more stretched over it (The prone seating on the S2R is even more exaggerated)

The FZ6 is probably more comfortable just to sit on. Both are great at speed and feel pretty similar.

The FZ6 feels a little smaller and quite a bit lighter. The FZ1 tank feels wider, it is right there and you have to hug it to ride the bike.

I feel better on the freeway. I’m a little bigger, and much more quick.

Sound

At low rpms, the FZ1 utters a low growl. It’s a little too loud, but lots of you folks would like it. At higher rpms, it sounds a lot like the FZ6.

Handling

The FZ1 suspension is superior. Period. Fully adjustable inverted forks. I never liked the mushy front end of the FZ6.

The mono shock is stiffer. I had the FZ6 set to 6. The FZ1 is set at it’s factory setting feels about as stiff, maybe more. Apparently there is also a mono shock rebound damping force adjustment.

I have not really got in to it because of the break-in (both me and the bike), but the FZ1 handles great. Pick a line and take it.

Transmission

The FZ1 is smoother than the FZ6. I kinda struggled with missing the shift to second from first on the FZ6. The dealers told me the transmissions were similar, but the FZ1 feels better, smoother.

The Ducati has both beat, that transmission felt like a Swiss watch.

Motor/Power

All you want. Any gear, any speed the thing accelerates, quickly. This bike can be scary. I think it could outrun the Ducati.

The FZ1 runs as smooth as the FZ6. Both are way more smooth than the S2R.

I think the FZ1 pulls as hard from low rpms as the S2R. Both the FZ1 and S2R pull maybe twice, three times, more than the FZ6. The FZ1 is capable of very hard acceleration.

The FZ1 top end is apparently about 170mph.

The FZ1 throttle does not have that annoying lurch as you just open it.

I’ll miss my FZ6. I was really worried about screwing the pooch on this deal. Have you heard the story about the guy that kept polishing his prize figurine until he broke the arm off? I always worry when I want to improve on something as good as the FZ6 is.

We’ll see.

OK, so it's not just me! I got that same impression, and at 6'5" smaller ain't better. I will still be very tempted if and when the time comes to get a new bike.
