Where I work, we had to come up with a pandemic plan to suit the needs of several of our biggest contractual customers. This coming week? How stupid is this? Mandatory FLU training! I'm almost embarrassed that our company is making us do this!

So they will give you the Flu User's Manual.

Step 1: Vomit.
Step 2: Diarehea.
Step 3: Goto Step 1.

There. You're trained.

True, Normal influenza claims thousands of lives each year globally and no one bats an eye. I think that when the H1N1 came about there were a few things that set it apart from normal influenza.
1. Flu symptoms in the summer, where it is normally a winter bug.
2. A viral strain that crossed over from animals to humans.
3. A virus that has a higher hit rate in the age groups who would normally not get influenza.
This list is obviously not exhaustive.

Overhere, people with higher risk of being hit by this flu get the vaccine, so that's the elderly and very young. Elderly already can get a normal flu shot each year anyway.

IMO Swine flu will in the media will either taper off after the recently passed election day or after all of this health care reform...

There was a scare in 1988 & 1976 and a full blown pandemic in 1918... as this is not a new problem, what are we doing wrong that this can ebb and flow?
Either
1. There is no outbreak, but people get this strain and it's business as usual, only difference being that the media is reporting on it for some reason.
2. If this is really a cross species infection, somebody screwed the pooch in the pig farming industry.
I really don't see either problem as unusual, wouldn't be the first time media was manipulated for someone's gain and wouldn't be the first time pig farmers were allowed to run under terribly irresponsible conditions (see necrotizing fasciits).

I think its interesting that we haven't heard much about the current Mumps outbreak...

i can't say that i haven't been affected a little by the coverage. i have two young girls at home (1.5 and 3.5 years old). i work at a university all day dealing with college students. i would hate to bring something home to them.

but, we act as though people don't die from the flu already and that this is something new. there have been reports of inflated numbers on it. and many people are being "diagnosed" with it without ever actually being tested. if someone has the flu we just say they have the swine flu. i think it's a big media hype and i'm not too worried at this point.

interestingly enough, last year we asked our pediatrician about flu shots for our girls. his response was pretty surprising. he said for a vaccine to be seen as affective you should see a decrease in the amount of people being treated for the illness. but we have never seen any evidence that the flu vaccine works. he said that just because he's a doctor that he's PROBABLY get one and MIGHT get his three children to get it.

my wife also went for her checkup a few months ago and was talking to the nurse who told her that north carolina (where we live) has gotten it wrong the last two years and the flu shot we have given out wasn't the strain of flu that came to our area so the flu shot was pretty worthless. this seemed od to me because i didn't realize states got their own batches. but she's in the med profession... not me.

My manager's 6 year old got H1N1 two weeks ago. She stayed home with her child for about 3 day weekdays, plus the weekend. Her child was back in school on the following Monday. The week prior her 4 year old had a chest cold and was much worse off than his brother with the flu.

Still debating whether I should get it or not. I just received the normal flu shot last week. My arm is still hurting, I hate shots.

I am not high risk and even if I do get it, I will simply only get sick. No underlying health issues. Good immune system, diet and I wash my hands regularly; I dont even plan on getting it in the first place

I have never had a flu shot, not about to go stand in the cold in a 5hour long lineup (seriously) to get one now haha

Its 06.22am here. Last patient just been transferred to the ward, I am just waiting for the night shift to finish. I have to wait up until 09:30 to go and get my jab before my ride home..
There is no way I could convince occy health team to stage a shot like that. Pure genius. Thanks for bringing a smile to my tired eyes.

I'm a bit conflicted about it. I was at the Dr. on Monday and asked about it. He said I don't need it and wouldn't even recommend it for me if he had some available as he considered me in a very low risk group. ( healthy male 56 years old). He said that the only ones right now he would recommend it to would be infants from 6 months old up to people under 30yo. and pregnant women. Something about those born in the 50's having some natural immunities from past strains of the H1N1. He did suggest and give me the regular seasonal flu shot. ( my arm still hurts).

But, I have been following a thread on another forum of a rider I've ridden with whose husband recently got H1N1 and has had very serious ( life threatening) respiratory complications from it. I've attached the link to this posting on the BeginnerBikers forum:

i dont understand the big problem here? this according to my doctor this is nothing but a variant of the regular flu and that on year of the regular flu kills more people than this has. my doctor advised me that there is nothing different about this flu other than they named it for some reason. also i am VERY wary about getting shots that my government is trying to force on me. i am a big believer in conspiracy theories and this just seems like way to easy of a way for them to give me something.

so no thanks ill take my chance. already had the (swine) flu this year (confirmed) and all it did was make me sore and tired for 4 days like ALL flus do. however i will give it this for credit, this is the first time i have had the flu in over 15 years so this sucker is pretty powerful to get through my defenses lol.

Yeah at my work we were all called together in one big hall, about 300 of us and we had a presentation about the flu. The funniest thing was when they said we had to try and avoid crowded places, everyone just cracked up

At the moment in the Netherlands it's only officially available for youngsters (under 4 years old) and older people and high risk groups.

This is the way I feel about it, I have 2 daughters of 5 and 7 and I would hate to think of anything happening to them, either because they haven't had the jab when they could have or that I have brought it home to them.
There have been several confirmed cases of the virus at my kids school. At the moment the vacine is only available for the very young, but they are talking about everyone being entitled to the next batch, so I'm seriously thinking about getting it for myself and the kids.
