grrrr... me sad, is my clutch cable dying?

so my 07 fizz has about 12000 miles. the clutch cable pull still feels a little rough. better after i lubed it but still aint as smooth. i came to this conclusion at a local dealer and i saw a 06 with 3000 miles (lol so little), i pulled it's clutch and the action feels a lot smoother, and the cable return action is "bouncy-er".

i dont understand this. i lubed my cable like crazy so there shouldn't be any residue inside the cable housing that would impair a smooth cable action. would it be the spring?

The cable actually runs through 2 sheaths. There could be gummed up lubricant that is causing the problem. I had a similar problem and used a lubricating device that forces lubricant down the assembly but I used a little WD-40 first and the silicone lubricant It has really improved but if you have a frayed cabled it will need replacing.

I'm with Cliff. + with12K miles, it might just be better, in the long run, to replace the cable.

that's the thing, there's no way for me to know if the cable is frayed. grrrrr... i guess i will use some wd40 then lube it again and see. i was told changing the clutch cable is a huge pain right? have to take out battery to gain access to it...?

my advice and it is just an opinion, is this.
Head to dealer and buy a spring and cable.
Put the cable under your seat as a spare just in case the old one does break one day in the boondocks.
Replace the spring assembly now.

My own spring isn't doing a great job of returning the cable all the way and I am feeling this is an inherent problem with the spring type which may be resolved in later models.

so i went nuts with wd40 and silicone lube now it seems to be better. gonna go for a ride later and see how it goes.

Buy a Haine's manual and an after-market one on ebay etc and change it yourself. It will be very cheap and you'll have peace of mind. It's gonna go at some point, especially if it's gone 12000 miles without being lubed. You'd be amazed how rotten and broken they can get inside those covers. A clutch is a scary thing to lose at high speeds. Much worse than the throttle cables going and you just lose power.
