Ground Hornet hauls Tarantula

One of the guys I work with shot this last night. A ground hornet is about 3/4 the size of your index finger. What they do is sting the spider and haul it to it's nest.

As I watched that I thought, this looks like something in Texas. Then I looked where you live:BLAA: I was stationed in Corpus for a while.....EVERYTHING in Tx is big!

That wasp is called a "Tarantula Hawk" She's female. I've seen one taunt the tarantula out of it's ground hole. The female wasp stings the tarantula to paralyze it. Then she pokes a hole in it and deposits her babies in the host and they eat the tarantula alive from the inside out.

We have a lot of those here in SoCal. :rockon:

It's actually a Japanese spider wasp, "aka" Tarantula wasp, Tarantula hawk, or Ground hornet.

We've got these in NY, i've seen em, They're peacefulish but crazy to see in person.... we have a nature trail (were a wildlife based college) and maybe 5 feet off a bridge that goes thru a swampy bit, there was a hive in a hollow part of a tree so these giants would fly across the bridge in front of you to get to the hive

I used to live near Houston Texas...we had every kind of poisonous snake on the continent as well as Scorpions (in the house), black widow and brown recluse spiders.... Not fun. The East Coast is so much better if you don't like large and poisonous insects!

They must be similar to our Potter Wasp , verge LARGE around 3 inches long but very rarely aggressive to humans :thumbup:
