GP Shifter

From my understanding standard which we are all familiar with goes 1 down and 5 up. GP is the reverse of this having 1 up and 5 down.(starting from neutral) What are the benefits of having GP rather than standard? Would it in general allow for quicker shifts? Would it reduce shifts into neutral when trying to smoke crappy civic's who think they are bada$$ in a 1/4 mile drag? Do they have them for the FZ6? Any input would be great. Did a search of the site but didn't find anything. I will admit that I am not very good at searching things.

well with regards to smoking trashy civics who think they are cool....you shouldn't need any additional equipment to handle that task....but yes the shifter is designed to reduce 1/4 mile times because it is easier to slam the shifter down real quick than up in theory....frankly if your looking for something to improve your 1/4 mile times I would check out the power commander power shifter that allows you to upshift without having to clutch, thereby saving you some time. 1/4 mile times for an FZ6 are usually right around 12 seconds with an exit speed of about 117MPH. Gp shifting shouldn't be necessary for that. GP shifting is help when dragging (because it is easier to kick down when accelerating hard to keep your weight on the forks) or on a track (especially helpful when kicking down coming out of a left hand turn). However it takes practice to become good at it after having learned to shift in the street pattern. In fact, racing or dragging while not being proficient will probably make you slower.

You can set up the FZ6 for GP style shifting if you want, all you need to do is move the shifter arm 180*...kinda hard to describe in writing, look in the Oso2k sticky, it is discussed in there.

I was off some (almost a whole second) on the time and ~8mph on the crossing velocity. BTW, these numbers are for stock bikes. The numbers I was quoting are closer to the numbers for an 05 FJR or 00 R6.

Yeah, especially since you'd only be in third gear at the end of the 1/4 mile!

Cool vid. I got a chuckle out of watching the guy in the left lane 'jackrabbit' off the line. lol If I ever tried to drag my bike, that is how I'd probably look!
