Garmin GPS and Givi side cases

Hey everyone just thought I would share some small mods Ive done to my bike. The first is a mount for a Garmin Nuvi GPS, after searching high and low for a suitable mount I decided to buy a ram mount. The ram mount ball was too big so I machined my own ball so I could snap on the standard ball adapter. The second is to the rear fender. When I bought the bike it had givi side bags and an led integated tailight/signal. The bag brackets interfere with the stock tail lights so this is why the integrated was used. I found the led light wasn't very bright and anyone riding with me found it hard to see. So I reinstalled the stock brake light and bought some small signal lights. I took the side reflector brackets and bolted them on the back underneath the rear reflector and mounted my signals to them.

I just bought a brand new Garmin Nuvi 1200 yesterday. I couldn't justify spending over $600 for a Garmin Zumo GPS that's motorcycle specific. I paid $104.00 plus tax at Best Buy Electronics.

It came with a windshield mount that uses a suction cup. I tried the mount ontop of my tank, and it stays in place pretty good. However, it requires me to look down a bit more vs having it mounted on the handlebars. I might try and see if it mounts onto the inside of my windscreen.

The GPS will come in handy next week when I head up to Oregon for a few days. 1100 miles, one shot!

Congrats on the GPS unit! NOthing better for long trips!! Check out RAM Mounts for all sorts of handy GPS mounts! I love my RAM mount for my Nuvi.

I've changed my setup slightly and actually now attach it to the mirror stalk instead of the handle bars. That way it doesn't move at all.

Nice work on mounting those rear signals! They look great! :thumbup:

Do us all a favor though and break out the heat gun/hair dryer and get rid of those ugly factory tank decals will ya!!

Nice setup Boneman. I too have the RAM unit for my little GPS Quest. Do you get vibrations on your gps from the mirror?

Davedew. I would recommend adding some sort of damper/cushioning to your handlebar bracket for the RAM mount. I have a little bit of double-sided tape to help reduce the vibrations, but will need to add more. The vibrations aren't good for the unit, as I have heard of gps units failing from this.

I got my Garmin mount from mountguys.com for dirt cheep. It is specific to the GPS and worked perfectly on my recent trip to SF and back (1500 miles in 7 days). RAM mounts are really nice but too expensive.

Surprizingly none! It's rock solid! If there is any, it's deffinately not noticable.

Who rides in the rain?!?!? Well quite simply I don't use it in the rain or if it starts to rain. RAM does have a waterproof 'box' that has a textile membrane on the front so you can still interact with your GPS. I thin it's like $70ish though.

If I am taking a trip long enough to need GPS, rain is probably going to be a factor. Maybe I'll check out that membrane case.
