Fz6 Death Engine

A friend has badly damaged his engine on a highway, 2 weeks ago.
The engine and clutch have stucked with a rumble noise.
Fortunately he has stopped beside the road without any problems.

The engine has 45k km's without any issues, and he says that he didn't pushed the engine too much at that moment.

No he has sold the bike as is to 1/3 of the new price.

What can cause this damage?
May be a stuck oil pump, loose cam chain tensioner, or cam chain...
What else?

What would have caused this? Did a connecting rod "let go" or was that the effect rather than the cause?

It's a 2006.
The cause seems like a discarded connection rod.

No, oil level should have been ok.

He says that, in his last gas stop, before this stuff happened, he has filled the tank with cheap gas including alcohol additives. May be that was the main reason.

wow... never would have thought, but here are the pics to prove it.. well... definitly toasted.. cant really tell if that was the cause or after affect, but it looks like it easily could have been the cause.. threw a rod.. blows... hopefully just a fluke, but luckly your friend wasnt hurt...

oh and i guess im back to putting in 91-93.. only one tank of 87 in the bike and that is the tank im on...

On the other hand, you can have a replacement engine for $500-1000 from ebay in US.

Looks like a rod or rod bearing, then rod failed.. The clutch basket damage and crankshaft damage is from the broken rod, parts floating around the engine damaged the clutch basket.

Ethonol fuel will not cause this, just about all fuel in the US (short of marina's) have ethenol (crap) in it.

Within the last month, another forum member heard some knocking from his engine and stopped immediatly. He had a rod bearing go out. I believe he got an new/used crank and rod on e-bay. He bought the bike used and didn't have many miles on it so I gather the previous owner didn't maintain/abused it and sold it when it started making a deep noise in the engine... He got it back together, nice and quiet...

His would have looked like yours had he kept riding...

That was my thought con rod bearing failure.... leading to a cascade of failures...

Clutch plates have stripped and parted out, then the parts coming out of them stucked the oil filter or oil ducts. Engine had lack of oil and that was the case for that broken rod.

The owner of the bike says, he has changed the clutch plates 6k km's ago with aftermarket EBC ones. He has changed the oil (Ipone 10/40 semi-synthetic) and oil filter (K&N) 3k km's ago.

Interesting, guess he didn't flush all the old clutch plate crap out... Too bad, something to watch for thou... thanks for the update...

As a side note, the local shop I frequent had an R6 with a blown up clutch. They had to pull the engine, the oil pan flip it upside down and pull clutch parts from the gears as the parts were jamming up the engine preventing spinning over

Looks like the rod gave up. Any idea what happened to this engine RPM wise in those final hours?

That was not bearing failure. . .
