So I finally picked up my bike and started getting her back up to par. The previous owner didn't do that great a job taking care of her. :( I was cleaning off the chain and noticed a large build-up of that black tar/grime/gunk stuff on the underside of the bike, on the wheels, etc. I take off the front sprocket cover to get in there, since I'm sure it's horrendously filthy, and the front sprocket nut looks like this...

I'm having a hard time thinking what might cause the nut to fold in like that on two sides. Is that going to cause me any trouble? I'm thinking I should just find a replacement regardless, but was wondering if anyone had run across something like this before.

That is not the nut. It is the lock washer behind the nut. It is splined to the output shaft and is supposed to be bent up against the flat on the nut to prevent the nut from working loose. Looks good to me. Anyone else see a problem?
