front end clunk???

Sometimes, more frequently then not, when coming to a complete stop, not while stopping but at the stop itself, when I release my brakes it makes a little clunk.
I have taken both calipers off and cleaned and relubed the pins, the head bearings are tight, the forks are the only other thing left that I can think of.

any ideas of what this little clunk is? or how to make it stop?

You probably already checked, but I'd say something in the steering head?? Bearings, torque etc??

Also check engine bolts too, mine was clunking under braking and found one of my crash bungs was loose! once tightened back up clunking stopped.

I did my normal check and tightening of bolts when I did my oil change 2 days ago, which included the 4 engine mounting bolts on the sides. I did not think that was related but im glad i ruled it out already

Wheel bearings perhaps? I lost one on my trip to Canada this summer. There was no clunking, but the brakes didn't work right and I had a shimmy in the steering. Don't put it off. Could lead to bigger issues if it's not resolved. I wouldn't ride it till you get it fixed.

brakes still grab great, no shimmy or any noise while riding or heat build up around the bearings. The clunk comes whenever I have left off the brakes, when im stopped, even if i wait 5 seconds to release the brakes it clunks.

I am curious as to the bearing thing tho....elaborate

You have stock fork springs? Could the forks be topping out? Is it a feeling or a sound, both?

When I stop with both brakes it binds the suspension in an upward position. Release of one end (front or back) and drops its stance (sometimes a few inches) but never clunks.

Edit: my words made no sense. . FWIW: I have R6 forks also.

I have the R6 front forks, it doesnt do it only when i jump on the brakes realllly hard but under normal braking.
It is an audible sound being made but as far as I can tell there doesnt appear to be any feeling, but I will have to pay close attention when I go ride tomorrow.

I think it was mentioned early; clutch cable getting caught, or even the brake hose?

is the battery a stock size, is it moving in the compartment? IDK, just throwing ideas out. So light braking no issues and general riding is no problem?

clutch is already pulled when the noise happens, battery will be checked but it is the stock size....brake hoses will be checked for clearance and whatnot.....the battery thing does seem to fit the noise tho!!!!

Only thing that hasn't been covered is the fairing frame mounting bracket. There are 2 bolts that hold the fairing assembly to the bike frame...if those were loose I would imagine a "clunk" could result on braking.

My money is still on steering head bearings worn or brake pads are loose in the calipers.

Not sure if it has been said, but have you checked the rear breaks? Come to a stop as hard as you can on the rear only without locking it up. Just trying to eliminate.

With bike off, push down on the forks a bunch with and without front brake. Anything?

They're pretty easy to check. Put the bike on the center stand and use a floor jack with a block of wood under the headers to raise the front or have someone push down on the back to raise it up. Then see if the wheel and tire will move side to side while holding the forks. You don't want any movement.

The rattle/spacer plates still in the brake calipers? Could be the pads moving a little in the caliper.

it has to be the pads. I have noticed that it has been doing it more frequently when I hold the brakes longer, like rocking back while still holding the brakes. I checked the battery and under the tank and all is tight.... I will have to take off the calipers and all again tomorrow

The SS anti rattle plate should go in with the small "arrow" facing forward. I'd make sure they are installed as noted and fully seated on the pads. Kinda doubt thats the clunking but there's not much else near the pads to make the noise.

To rule out the calpers, you could remove the pads and make sure their NOT real sloppy when in the calipers (forward and backward movement) as the calipers are taking the brunt of the forward stopping forces... Obviously, they should move freely but if there's a bunch of play between the edge of the pads and calipers, that would make some knocking noises...

I'd make sure you replace the pads exactly back from the exact same disc (side too) they came out of...
