fitting my tomtom ridee to the battery

Erm, just how do I do it? I'll admit, I'm not the most mechanically minded biker...(I just learned where the engine was last week LOL) I guess I could just attatch the red and black directly to the battery, but would this be using power even when the bikes off and the tomtom disconnected? I would much prefer to attatch the power post ignition switch. Anyone know how to do this?

i connected my gps wire directly to the battery and just took the gps off the mount when not running, it wont draw if nothing is connected to it.

Well I would go to the fuse box and find a 12 volt connection which would suffice. That way its clean, hidden and you don't have to mess with the battery. Of course it's a little more work. Does anyone know if there are empty fuse holders to tap into for this sort of thing? That would be prime! Prime as in best, not the numbers which are not divisible by anything but themselves and 1. Those are cool too though, in their own little way.

I went to the boat store to get a marine grade quality (stainless) power receptacle. I machined a plate out of stainless to accommodate it and the throttle cables. I mounted it under the triple tree using existing hole and tabs(see pic). I used an in line fuse going to the positive side of the receptacle and the plus side battery post. Then I connected the negative side to the negative battery post. This is also VERY convenient for charging the battery as I use a male plug that goes right into the receptacle for charging(no lifting the tank). Hope this gives you some ideas. :Flash: P.S. Check the amperage rating of the thing that would use the most power for the receptacle and use a fuse rated a little higher.

I have used some marine insulating tape around the wires to keep water out.
I have had no issues with battery drain.

cigarette lighter plug is perfect for the gps connections,,or any kinds of 12v car devices ,,,i sometimes use my air pump too,,,directly from the battery to the plug,,,,install the plug on a convenient location,,,,see attachment...and you are good to go....
as long as you turn the gps off before your bike,,you wont be wasting the charge of your battery..

I had an unused, switched 12v plug under the left hand pod (there is also an unswitched 12v connector there) so I utilised this. I have to add that I use my tomtom in my tank bag, so it's handy to have the power lead come out from under the seat. I don't know if the american bikes are the same electrically as you guys have the running lights?

Now then all, bit of a newbie to the site. Got an 08 plate FZ6 S2 and newly acquired TomTom Rider V2 Europe for my first trip in April.

Cloggy, I dont suppose you have a pic of the spare connector, im currently thinking how to wire mine. Lifted the tank and noticed the connector sat on top of the battery with a spare connection so was just gonna tap into that with an inline fuse rated just above what the device draws but wasnt sure where the best place would be to pick the neutral up from, daft question but should i just take that straight from the battery? Wasnt sure if the bike would be happy with no neutral for a min or so while i removed the neutral screw? Or should i just connect it to the frame?

Sorry if this seems a daft question.

I've connected my Rider2 Cradle to the tail light, - this way it's switched, and the tail light wires are easy to access.
If you wirering kit is like mine (got the OEM one from tom-tom), - it's un-fused .... You do of course have to use an in-line fuse on the positive wire, - just in case!

As the cradle is passive(No speaker like the car-mount one) I doubt that it will use any power if on an un-switched connection, - but as A rule of thumb, - always put it on a switched.

Hello fellow TomTom Rider v2 users...

I've got a real problem - my v2 Docking Shoe doesn't charge my TomTom unit. I'm on my third (!) Docking Shoe from TomTom and none of them seem to work.

Ok, the symptoms:
- TomTom unit is fine & charges AOK on the in-car docking shoe
- on the bike, TomTom doesn't display charging below battery symbol
- so it's either the docking shoe, or the supply from the bike
- my dealer's checked the wire from the bike supply and says it's fine, but that there's no earth on any of the docking shoe pins

I can't believe all three of these shoes are faulty, so I'm beginning to question my bike supply setup. Only problem is, I don't know the first thing about bike electrics, but I'm going to have to learn if I want to sort this problem.

Any advice on where to start i.e. next thing(s) to check? I haven't got a voltmeter but I'll get one if needed to get to the bottom of this. Thanks

Mine runs off the cigarette lighter under my seat.

Get the line fused to save your GPS, just in case.

Every month or so I run mine over with some contact cleaning spray, - this keeps it in shape. I clean both the rider and the cradle contact points with it.
I started this procedure since I was having the same problems you describe.
